Foes of Pebble Mine lose a round in court
Opponents of the Pebble Mine lost one of their lawsuits Friday, when a federal court judge ruled against them. The case is about the so-called “pre-emptive veto” the Environmental Protection Agency issued during the Obama administration, before the Pebble Partnership filed its application for a proposed gold and copper mine in Southwest Alaska.,, U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason ruled Friday that the EPA could withdraw its proposed determination from 2014. Zinke tells greens he’ll make ‘grand pivot’ to conservation
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke yesterday huddled with more than two dozen conservation group leaders, including some of his staunchest critics, in his latest bid to generate both ideas and support for his ambitious departmental reorganization plans. He got an earful, and may have gained some goodwill. Bristol Bay Area Plan stirs debate
thebristolbaytimes.com – The controversial Bristol Bay Area Plan is the subject of the meetings. Revision to the plan in 2005 were seen as favoring mining over fish, leading to a lawsuit by Trout Unlimited, Alaska Independent Fisherman’s Marketing Association, and six tribal groups. “DNR ignores past priorities that put fish first,” according to newspaper advertisement by the plaintiffs in last week’s Bristol Bay Times – Dutch Harbor Fisherman.
