May deaths of two New Brunswick fishermen prompt advisory letter from TSB
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has issued a warning to three government bodies about overloading fishing boats, in response to the deaths of two New Brunswick lobster fishermen earlier this year. Fifty-eight-year-old Eugene Beaudin and his 33-year-old great-nephew, Normand Beaudin, fell off their fishing boat and died in the water off Miscou Island, N.B., on May 6. In the Oct. 30 letter to Transport Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and WorkSafeNB, the safety board’s director of marine investigations, Clifford Harvey, wrote that the vessel Tracy Dawn left the harbour loaded with 119 traps and encountered rough weather. New rules in works to lift safety standards in fishing industry
Last year was the deadliest year for the Canadian fishing industry in more than a decade. Seventeen people died aboard fishing vessels in 2018, the most since 2004, prompting the Transportation Safety Board of Canada to sound the alarm about the industry’s safety culture. As it stands, fishing vessels are not considered a workplace, meaning they don’t adhere to any WorkSafeNB compliance requirements. TSB recommends mandatory safety measures following investigation
Drawing attention to the wide range of safety risks that persist in the fishing industry, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) today released its investigation report (M16A0140) into the June 2016 fatal capsizing of fishing vessel C19496NB near Miller Brook Wharf, Salmon Beach, New Brunswick.,,, Therefore, the Board recommends that the government of New Brunswick and WorkSafeNB require persons to wear suitable personal flotation devices at all times when on the deck of a commercial fishing vessel or on board a commercial fishing vessel without a deck or deck structure and that WorkSafeNB ensure that programs are developed to confirm compliance. click here to read the story 13:42
Dock death in Caraquet N.B. – WorkSafeNB investigates
The mood remained tense on the dock at Caraquet Monday after a 40-year-old man was killed in an industrial accident there. Workers on the wharf were unloading a truck full of ice and transferring it to a boat when Gérald Doiron was killed. The exact cause of the death is under investigation, but it’s believed he was struck by ice that slid out of the truck, pinning him in the boat. Doiron worked for Provincial Trans Ltd. in Lamèque, delivering ice to fishing boats. A large dump truck was being used to move the 25 tonnes of ice from the truck to the fish hold of the boat. Two other men were injured in the accident, which WorkSafeNB is investigating. Read the rest here 18:34
