F/V Catherine Lane: Wrecked shrimp boat breaking apart

The shrimp boat that wrecked June 9 near Cumberland Island is now breaking apart, littering the water and coastline. “I got contacted by Florida Fish and Wildlife to see if we could go out and take some pictures,” Cary Cosgrove said. “I thought we’d get out there and find a shrimp boat but we get out there and couldn’t find it,” That’s because in the ten days since the boat crashed, it had broken apart,,, “The hull is a couple hundred feet off the rocks,” Cosgrove said. “The remnants from the rest of the boat were scattered all over the place.” Video, >click to read< 15:31

F/V Catherine Lane: North Carolina shrimp boat remains stranded on the rocks north of Amelia Island

Efforts are being made to remove the shrimp boat that crashed into the jetties north of Amelia Island on Wednesday. The U.S. Coast Guard has said contractors were able to remove fuel from the boat, though thousands of gallons have leaked from the vessel named Catherine Lane. It’s licensed out of North Carolina. On Friday, the Coast Guard said the responsible party hired contractors and removed 1,050 gallons of diesel from the boat. But Nassau County Emergency Management has said 3,200 gallons of fuel and oil has spilled into the water. >video, click to read< 09:37

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
