Federal Fishery Disaster Aid Meeting to be held in Gloucester tonight

cashThe distribution of the nearly $33 million in federal groundfish disaster aid has moved through the first two phases — or bins, in the parlance of NOAA Fisheries NMFS and the respective state fisheries directors — in the past year-and-a-half. Tonight, the Gloucester Fishing Commission will take a stab at coming up with what it believes to be the best option for the nearly $7 million earmarked for Massachusetts. Massachusetts Shoreside businesses can begin applying for federal fishery disaster aid

blue fleet weldingShoreside businesses interested in securing a share of the $750,000 in federal fishery disaster aid designated for Massachusetts must submit pre-qualification information to the state by May 31. The state Division of Marine Fisheries is managing the distribution of the financial assistance to those waterfront businesses that have been damaged economically by the ongoing federally declared groundfish fishery disaster. More than 450 Cook Inlet fishermen receive aid money

In Cook Inlet, 454 checks were mailed — 481 eligible fishermen received applications for the payments. Another 330 checks were sent to Kuskokwim fishermen, out of 471 initially expected to be eligible, and 564 out of 599 eligible Yukon fishermen received payments. Read the rest here 16:26

Push is on to speed aid to fishermen

gdt iconFishing advocates are questioning why the direct assistance contained in the federal fishery disaster aid plan is going to take so long to get to eligible fishermen and permit holders. “The long-term programs like the buyback and the state grants are going to take more time and we understand that,” Jackie Odell, executive director of the , said Monday. “But the idea was to get the direct assistance money out the door sooner rather than later.” Read more here 06:35
