A World Bank panel is calling for public-private partnerships to improve the health of the world’s oceans. In a report released Wednesday, the panel convened by the World Bank’s Global Partnership for Oceans — an alliance of more than 140 governments, social groups, industry and other interests — encouraged greater cohesion between ocean users and a focus on holistic policy goals. more@sustainablebusiness 16:55
NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. I guess helping destroy the groundfish fleet wasn’t enough. Now she wants to help destroy the livelihoods of fishermen around the world. Maybe she has plans for some kind of worldwide catch share debacle. Maybe the world will get lucky and she will drop dead before further damage is done.
Gag me with a King Salmon! Why no one’s turned her into crab bait is beyond me. Oh wait, that’s right, she eliminated 90% of the crab fleet.
