Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board oversight shifted to lt. governor

BATON ROUGE, La. – Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne has received new responsibilities from state lawmakers, giving him oversight of a board that promotes Louisiana seafood. The seafood board had only modest funding before the BP oil spill in 2010, with about a $300,000 annual budget. It had been largely autonomous, under some oversight from the wildlife and fisheries department. But the board’s profile was raised when it received $30 million from BP for a seafood marketing campaign, to reassure visitors that Louisiana’s seafood was safe. continued@houmatoday

LAKE Erie’s multi-species commercial fishery has entered MSC assessment. If certified, this fishery will provide a significant volume of lake fish to markets in North America and globally. There are six species of lake fish being considered in the assessment: yellow perch, walleye (pickerel), rainbow smelt, lake white fish, white bass and white perch. These six species are caught by vessels based in Ontario, Canada, using trawls, trap nets and gill nets and by vessels based in the U.S. portion of Lake Erie using trap nets. continued@ fishnewseu

It’s survival of the fittest for fish in the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Asian Carp, a non-native fish, are rapidly multiplying and threatening other species of fish. Now Shafer fisheries in Thomson, Illinois is harvesting them. They’re catching an average of 80,000 lbs. of asian carp a week, and they’re cashing in on this fish with a bad rep. “We’re pretty much the only ones left,” said Owner Michael Shafer. Shafer said times are definitely changing in the commercial fishing industry. continued

The Telegraph – American Heartland is the licensee of Falcon Protein’s patented process of turning Asian carp – an invasive species of U.S. inland waterways – into fish meal and fish oil. Grafton residents Ben Allen and Bryon LeBeau also make up American Heartland Fish Products, formerly known as Inland Fisheries Processing and Marketing Research Center. Last November, the group closed on its building and land. The plant also will bring jobs to the area. continued

USGS tests potential sites in St. Clair River for new spawning reefs

Sturgeon, officially classified as threatened in Michigan, are the dinosaurs of the Great Lakes, with their dramatic armoring and slow maturation rates, growing as long as six feet in length and living as long as 150 years in the case of females, which spawn every four years. The USGS has had its eye on the Hart Light site for a while. But the agency’s models – which emphasize river flow and depth – only recently identified Courtright as a potential reef site, said Ireland. The Courtright and Hart Lights are on the Canadian side of the river, but the reefs would be constructed in U.S. waters. continued
