Oak Hill fights looming ban on fishing in wildlife refuge

oak hill“A determination was made that commercial harvesting of fish, crabs and shellfish has inherent impacts upon the marine environment that are not compatible with the purpose of the refuge; consequently, the decision was to end permitting of the activity by October 2018,” Refuge Manager Layne Hamilton (bureaucrat) said in an email. “We recognized the long history of commercial fishing and the economic dependence of many local residents on this activity and that is reason the Fish and Wildlife Service provided a 11-year transition to reduce the hardship.” Read the rest here 20:35

Commercial fishing captain who pleaded guilty to federal poaching charges is missing

A commercial-fishing boat found Wednesday without its 67-year-old operator triggered a search by U.S. Coast Guard aircraft and boats off Key West. The search for Dennis Dallmeyer continued late Wednesday. Dallmeyer was being prosecuted in federal court for his role in a lobster-poaching operation. In late November, Dallmeyer agreed to plead guilty. Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 27. Read the rest here 08:28

FWC announces new law enforcement director

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced a new law enforcement director, Col. Curtis Brown. Brown, known among colleagues at the FWC and partner agencies for his dedication to conservation, will oversee more than 1,000 employees in the FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement.“We are excited about Col. Keys fishery issues back on tap

The ban and a lack of consistent fishing regulations among the major government fishery agencies that have jurisdiction in Keys waters has led to the formation of a committee to look at South Florida fishing regulations. The committee — which is comprised of members from South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management councils and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) — will meet for three days in Key West starting Jan. 13 Read the rest here 10:18

Shad season for Georgia Commercial Fishermen to open Jan. 1

Commercial fishermen can take to the water beginning at 6 a.m. Jan. 1 to take advantage of the opening day of shad season, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. Shad season runs through midnight Tuesday, March 31. Fishermen need to be aware that, due to a recent regulation change, they now are required to possess a free letter of authorization in addition to their commercial fishing license to commercially fish for shad. Coast Guard Responds to Fishing Vessel in distress off South Carolina coast

USCGThe Coast Guard responded to a vessel taking on water Saturday, 48 miles southeast of Folly Beach, South Carolina. No injuries were reported, and the vessel did not sink. Mass starfish stranding reported on Fripp Island

The stranding of thousands of starfish on Fripp Island was likely due to Wednesday’s stormy weather, according to a marine veterinarian. George Sedberry, a science coordinator in national Office of Marine Sanctuaries, said he has not studied this stranding but offered other possible explanations for the sea stars’ deaths. The Bernstein family and Island Trust Agreement Development redevelopment prompts concerns for commercial fishing there

One of Stock Island’s largest landowners intends to keep commercial fishing part of a plan to redevelop a large portion of Safe Harbor, the owners said. The lack of details about the development have led to speculation and uneasiness among fishermen. The Bernstein family and the owners of Fishbusterz fish market want to ease those fears. Signs of hope for endangered sawfish

Approaching Port Everglades in a helicopter, Ryan Goldman peered down at the water and saw a ray swimming at unusually high speed. Behind it, he spotted two large and bizarre-looking predators: the endangered smalltooth sawfish, which use their long, serrated bills to hunt prey. The two 12-foot-long fish swam out of the inlet as the helicopter circled and Goldman, a biologist for Broward County who was in the air to count manatees, took photos. Read the rest here 17:26

City of Fernandina Beach opposes seismic testing for oil in ocean

Fernandina Beach has joined more than 25 coastal towns that are saying “no” to seismic testing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. City commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to that effect Tuesday.,,the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, or BOEM, received approval this year for seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean, which had been declared off-limits for oil exploration since 1982. NOAA imposes new rules to protect Bluefin Tuna

NOAA destroying fishermenNew restrictions are being placed on fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast to protect the prized bluefin tuna species from being overfished.  On Monday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the rules for commercial fishing vessels. Possible rule changes for hogfish overfishing

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Life Research Institute recently completed a stock assessment of hogfish and found the ones in Atlantic Ocean waters off Florida are currently undergoing overfishing, which means the fish mortality rate is at a level that is too high and not sustainable, according to research institute fisheries biologist Mike Murphy. End of season Georgia shrimp – “It’s just part of being a fisherman. Sometimes they’re there, sometimes they’re not.”

County Council greenlights stricter rules for jellyfish companies

Beaufort County Council approved new rules designed to more strictly regulate local jellyfish operations Monday night. Slow start to stone crab season
