Breaking : Wreckage found from the Foxy Lady II

BOSTON — Coast Guard Sector Boston confirmed the discovery of the submerged wreckage of the 45-foot fishing vessel Foxy Lady II, Friday at approximately 11 a.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Massachusetts Marine Environmental Police received multiple reports of fishing vessels becoming entangled on an underwater obstruction while trawling in areas between Provincetown, Mass., and Cape Ann, Mass. BP: Government overestimated size of spill

NEW ORLEANS — BP has urged a  federal judge to rule the company can’t be penalized for millions of gallons of  oil that spewed from its blown-out well but was captured before it could spill into the Gulf of Mexico.

Rep. Markey’s amendment, which was filed today, seeks to restore the $150
million in funding as an emergency appropriation, and therefore would not
require a reduction in spending from other relief programs in the bill. Rep.
Markey is the Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee, which has
jurisdiction over fisheries issues and funding for NOAA. Read more

Rep. Tierney’s amendment has been cosponsored by Don Young (R-Alaska), Joe Courtney (D- Connecticut), Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), James McGovern (D-Massachusetts), Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts), Bill Keating (D-Massachusetts) and Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts).

 

National Marine Fisheries Service seeks input on coral protection

The proposal came in response to a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group seeking to extend endangered species protection to additional animals. “We really do have a coral reef crisis on our hands,” said Miyoko Sakashita, senior attorney and oceans director at the center. “The scientists are telling us coral reefs could very well disappear within our lifetimes.” Read more

I share with the readership of the News-Times a tale of the loss of an old friend. This former acquaintance at one time employed hundreds of Carteret County residents in its endeavors. A myriad of others were hired to build its vessels, supply fuel to these vessels, stock its galleys with food, machine its engine parts, mend its nets and truck its production. Read more

Coast Guard assists fishing vessel aground near Kodiak (F/V Neptune)

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a report at 1:40 a.m. from the Neptune crew stating they ran aground and were taking on water. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast for assistance from any nearby mariners and requested the launch of the helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak.  Read more

Coast Guard chopper plucks sick fisherman from F/V Sao Paulo

The boat’s crew called Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England at approximately 3:50 p.m., and the helicopter had the fisherman off the boat by 6 p.m., the Coast Guard said. Read more

Pacific Tuna Stocks Have Plummeted, Scientists Warn – fished relentlessly for decades, in trouble.

A report issued this week  by fisheries scientists on behalf of fishing nations, including the United States and Japan, shows that decades of uncontrolled overfishing have left stocks vulnerable, with conservationists warning that there is a real possibility of their collapse. The fisheries scientists, working for an organization known as the International Scientific Committee to Study the Tuna and Tuna-Like Species of the North Pacific Ocean, spell out the crisis in unusually stark language. pcohanThat’s right, these clueless congressmen — while understandably questioning whether fishermen’s disaster aid is appropriate within a bill providing relief to victims of Superstorm Sandy — believe it’s just fine for the bill to include $261 million for NOAA projects to promote so-called “ocean zoning” or marine spacial planning and for NOAA’s development of new weather satellites and other hi-tech equipment. Yet any ocean zoning scheme would almost certainly bring more closed fishing areas and further devastate the industry. Read more
