Hoping ‘to turn the tide’ on Atlantic salmon-improved hydraulic egg-planting method

Near a site along the eastern branch of the Sheepscot River last week, Maine Department of Marine Resources biologist Paul Christman prepared the salmon eggs, carefully lifting the tiny pinkish-orange orbs wrapped in damp cheesecloth and placing them into a wide-mouthed beverage cooler. The eggs, fertilized last fall at Green Lake National Fish Hatchery in Ellsworth, have developed small black specks for eyes and are no larger than the tip of a child’s pinkie finger. They’re stronger than recently fertilized eggs, Christman said. Read more, video

N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries surveying commercial fishermen

The survey will provide information on fishing habits, perceptions, income, expenditures and demographics. The information gathered in the survey will be used in fishery management plans as well as to develop economic impact models and to help fisheries managers make informed decisions on various fisheries topics, the release said. Commercial fisherman killed, 3 others pulled to safety, after boat capsizes near St. Lucie Inlet

PORT SALERNO, Fla. – A commercial fisherman from Belle Glade is dead and  several others are recovering after investigators said a giant wave capsized  their boat near the St. Lucie Inlet on Saturday. Florida Fish and Wildlife said Fransico Rodriguez, 60, was found  floating in the water and deceased. George Delgato, Jorge Ramaro and  Carlos Carmellon were also in the boat but survived. John Summers, 72, was out fishing for Mackerel on Saturday when he noticed  someone floating in the water. Read more, video

Maine Department of Marine Resources closes more scallop fishing areas

In a statement released Friday evening, the department indicated it was immediately closing scallop fishing grounds at the mouth of the Damariscotta River,mk

in Somes Sound and around Greenings Island off Mount Desert Island, and in Gouldsboro and Dyer bays off Gouldsboro and Steuben. Read more
