Deadline is Feb. 5 to nominate to Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association board

Officials of the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association have issued a reminder of the Feb. 5 deadline for members interested in nominating themselves or someone else for a seat on the association’s board of directors.

SMAST independence shouldn’t be the one that got away – Steve Urbon

First stage of review of fish rulemaking released

The inspector general started the investigation last year after requests from former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank and U.S. Rep. John Tierney. The lawmakers say rulemakers had forgotten their mandate to develop and involve the commercial fishing industry. Among the review’s findings: Financial disclosure by regional managers did little to increase transparency and record-keeping was inconsistent. Read more

Tri Marine American Samoa cannery set to open in 2014

Tri Marine has major activity underway in American Samoa with the large fleet of purse seiners operating here. The cannery is now expected to be up and running sometime in 2014. A crucial part of the cannery project is construction of a seawall and dock to the east of the plant.  Sullivan said up to now the US Army Corps of Engineers has still not issued a permit for the seawall and dock. NFI: Mercury warning based on fraudulent report

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) has condemned a report by the Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI) which it says misled the public on the safety of commercial seafood. The BRI reported data which warned of mercury levels in seafood exceeding guidelines, but the NFI has said this data was “false, and has not been peer-reviewed or published in scientific journals”.
