DFO’s plea to fishermen: Avoid nine reefs in Strait of Georgia
The federal fisheries department is asking commercial fishermen to voluntarily avoid nine reefs in the Strait of Georgia while talks are underway to make the fishing closures official and help ensure protection of fragile glass sponges — possibly the “longest living animals” in the world. Washington State cracks down on derelict boats
When the derelict 60-foot tugboat Chickamauga was towed away from Bainbridge Island earlier this winter, Doug Crow, the manager of Eagle Harbor Marina, breathed a sigh of relief. The tug’s owner hadn’t paid his moorage fees for months, and when the tug sank at the dock, spilling fuel oil into the harbor, a crane had to lift the leaky boat off the bottom. Herring sac roe prices down from last year

Chaos among crew on F/V American Dynasty leading up to the collision
An American fishing vessel ran into a docked HMCS Winnipeg in Esquimalt Harbour last spring because of a chaotic series of failures by crew and on-board equipment, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has found. Read more here timescolonist 15:31

NMFS clears commercial fishing in sea lion habitat – Not if, but, When will Oceana sue?
After a research review, the NMFS is prepared to loosen controversial limits on commercial fishing in the western Aleutian Islands. That has cleared NMFS to open more fishing grounds in the western Aleutians, as early as next year. Michael LeVine says that’s pretty sudden. Red Snapper Season in Jeopardy

The inadequacy of the prevailing fisheries management science has been long recognised by knowledgeable fishermen, and by many scientists independent of their governments’ authority. Not that establishment’s scientists have been unaware of this deficiency – one can read it between the lines of official reports. But, improving the existing science-management system requires a major strategic shift, a difficult undertaking for a large, well-financed and firmly established decades-old system.
