Two missing fishermen found dead off the Maine coast
The crew of another fishing boat recovered the bodies of two people, believed to have been crew members on the Hayley Ann, from the waters southeast of Portland. The bodies of two fishermen were recovered after their boat sank off the coast of southern Maine on Thursday afternoon, the Coast Guard said. Two people were pulled unresponsive from the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after an automated emergency signal was issued 45 miles southeast of Portland, the Coast Guard said. NOAA Satellites Helped Save Record 421 Lives in 2019: Registered Emergency Beacons Proven to Save Lives
Of the 421 U.S. rescues last year, 306 were water rescues, 38 were from aviation incidents and 77 were from events on land, where PLBs were used. Florida had the most SARSAT rescues with more than 100, followed by Alaska with more than 50. The previous rescue record of 353 (total) was set in 2007. A memory of the Fishing Vessel Patricia Marie in Provincetown
An error in the Banner brought Provincetown resident Joan Cordeiro to our doorstep on Friday. Her handwritten note pointed out the inaccurate description of what was the worst night for the Provncetown fishing fleet in over 60 years, when the scallop-laden Patricia Marie sank with all hands aboard Oct. 24, 1976. The boat went down about three miles off Nauset Light in heavy seas and rain, the Provincetown Advocate reported that week. Only the body of vessel captain William King, was immediately recovered — the next day, on a buoy. Maine DMR wants to close the pogy fishery to newcomers for 2 years while it crafts a new FMP/Enforcement plan.
“Closing fisheries is kind of a radical step and a dangerous step because it eliminates diversity,” said Commissioner Pat Keliher. “We’re not saying close it in perpetuity. Close it to see if there is a different approach here that would allow us to get both enforcement and reporting back under control.” Keliher said the 2019 menhaden season was challenging because of “a perfect storm of circumstances.” A sharp reduction in the herring quota spurred huge growth in the menhaden fleet, with 50 new boats rushing to satisfy the $485 million lobster industry’s need for substitute bait. >click to read< 07:23
Coast Guard reminds mariners of hazardous bar conditions in Pacific Northwest
Recent incidents have highlighted the challenges of attempting to cross waterway bars in heavy weather and at night. The marine casualty of a commercial fishing vessel on the Coos Bay bar resulted in the loss of a vessel, but miraculously all three crew members were saved. Unfortunately, in a similar incident on the Yaquina Bay bar, both the crew and the vessel were tragically lost. Body found in search for missing fisherman off Wexford coast
It is believed a body has been found in the search for missing fisherman William “Willie” Whelan off the Wexford coast. Mr Whelan, 41, from Saltmills, Co Wexford, disappeared when his trawler, the Alize,,, A second fisherman – Joe Sinnott, 65, from Kilmore Quay – died in hospital after being rescued and was laid to rest last week. F/V Pappy’s Pride: The owner of a chemical tanker ship has denied liability for a collision with a fishing boat
Norway-based Odfjell SE filed a motion Friday in response to a federal lawsuit brought by relatives of one of the fishermen who was killed. The family accuses Odfjell SE of failing to safely operate its 600-foot tanker, the Bow Fortune. The ship collided with the 81-foot Paddy’s Pride on Jan. 14 near the entrance to Galveston Bay. Helping fellow fisherman led to court appearance for Cardigan and Newport pair
Doing a good deed for a fellow fisherman when his boat sank along with thousands of pounds of equipment led to two men appearing in court. David Norman Sneade, of Maes Morfa, Newport, and Kevin John Hancock, of Rhyd y Felin, Cardigan, appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court for the conclusion of their trial on Monday, January 20. British Columbia: Commercial salmon sector braces for another tough year on coast
B.C. commercial salmon fishermen are waiting for pre-season forecasts due next month after 2019 delivered the lowest returns on record for prized Fraser River sockeye. Coast Guard notes communications dead zones in Southeast
The U.S. Coast Guard has released a list of communications towers in Alaska that may not be receiving VHF radio broadcasts and is warning mariners to bring back up communications systems. Seven of the problem towers are in Southeast Alaska, including Zarembo Island and Cape Fanshaw near Wrangell and Petersburg, two towers in southern Southeast near Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island, along with sites near Sitka and Pelican. On this day in 1873, a series of stations on the Outer Cape built for the newly created U.S. Life Saving Service were manned for the first time. At about 1340 hours Sunday, the Regional Operational Center for Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS) Jobourg received word that the fishing boat Stenaca II had accidentally caught a 1940s-era explosive device and hauled it on board. Tuesday is the deadline to comment on upcoming shrimp management plan changes
The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries public scoping closes on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for comments on potential management strategies for an upcoming amendment to the Shrimp Fishery Management Plan.
