Coast Guard detains illegal alien crewmember and captain of fishing vessel with outstanding felony warrant

The Coast Guard detained an alien crewmember illegally present in the U.S. and the captain of a commercial fishing vessel near Port Isabel, Friday afternoon. During a commercial fishing vessel boarding, a Coast Guard Station South Padre Island boat crew identified a crewmember as a Mexican alien illegally present in the U.S. The captain of the fishing vessel, F/V Los Nietos, had an outstanding felony warrant for weapons charges. How a Risky State Investment in Seafood Cost Alaskans Millions and left a Fishing Town in Crisis

Last summer, an unsettling quiet cloaked the isolated Southwest Alaska community of King Cove as the town’s economic engine — a sprawling seafood processing plant — sat shuttered. Bunkhouses, once filled with hundreds of workers during the peak salmon harvest, were vacant. Four diesel generators that had rumbled day and night were stilled. The plant docks, once lined with boats and circled by fish-scavenging gulls, were empty. The closure resulted from the financial implosion of the plant’s owner, Peter Pan Seafood. Some local fishing boat captains directed their ire at company leaders who accepted their seafood, then failed to pay them. They dwelled far less on a surprising, largely silent, powerhouse investor in the plant: the state of Alaska. Photos, more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 12:41

Phil Murphy Has Failed New Jersey as Energy Prices Skyrocket and Clean Energy Promises Fall Flat

When Governor Phil Murphy took office in 2018, he pledged to lead New Jersey towards a future powered by affordable, clean energy. His promise was clear: a greener, more sustainable state with electricity rates that would not burden its residents. Fast forward to today, and it’s evident that this vision has not only failed to materialize but has instead resulted in a starkly different reality for New Jerseyans. Since Murphy’s inauguration, electricity rates have surged dramatically. According to recent reports, New Jersey residents are now facing rate hikes of up to 60% – a far cry from the affordable energy promise. This increase doesn’t just hit our wallets; it reflects a broader failure in policy implementation and energy management. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 10:38

New trawler built in Urk

There was no doubt in Urk fisherman Jelle Hakvoort’s mind that he wanted to build his new trawler close to home. Urk co-operative VCU played a significant role in the construction of new multi-purpose fishing vessel Janneke Z-575, which has begun fishing with beam trawl gear. Urk company Werft Shipbuilding is the designer and has been the main contractor throughout – while VCU’s Albert Hartman has also been closely involved with the construction even before the order had been placed. Another battle over lucrative juvenile eel fishery lands in court

A group of companies with licences to fish for highly lucrative juvenile eels along Maritime rivers turned once again to the courts on Friday in their bitter dispute with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans over decisions it has made in the fishery. The latest case deals with the department’s unwillingness to raise the total allowable catch in the elver fishery from 9,960 kilograms, a figure that has remained unchanged for two decades and which licence holders argue can be increased. A lawyer for the attorney general of Canada and a lawyer for the group that represents a number of licence holders made their arguments Friday in Federal Court. The judge in the case said he will issue a decision soon. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 07:02
