Selling more NL fish within Canada not likely strategy as fishery looks to diversify amid Trump tariffs

There’s been lots of talk of knocking down interprovincial trade barriers to help promote the buy Canadian campaign launched in response to American tariff threats, but it’s unlikely those efforts will benefit the fishery much. Those involved in the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery have sounded the alarm, warning that the fishery would be among the province’s industries hit hardest by the 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian exports United States President Donald Trump has promised to impose. The response of the fishing industry has been to express a need to expand its markets beyond the U.S., where much of the locally caught and processed product is sold. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 17:01

Should Trump levy tariffs to protect this Louisiana industry? Clay Higgins asks for help

Acadiana Congressman Clay Higgins has asked President Trump to increase tariffs and trade enforcement on shrimp, crawfish and other imported seafood to protect one of Louisiana signature industries. Louisiana is the second-largest seafood producing state behind only Alaska.“Domestic shrimpers, fishermen, and crawfish producers in Louisiana and across the country face significant challenges competing against foreign seafood industries that are heavily subsidized and engage in illegal dumping into the United States,” Higgins wrote in a letter to Trump. “These unrighteous trade practices artificially drive down prices, disrupt fair market conditions, and threaten the livelihoods of hardworking American seafood producers. more. >>CLICK TO READ<< 15:05

Fishermen push for further changes to Portugal’s offshore wind farm plan

In spite of concessions made to the national offshore wind farm plan, fishermen are still not happy. The VianaPesca co-operative claims the plan as it has been re-thought still “absorbs the largest fishing site” off north western Viana do Castelo. “We have already alerted the prime minister to introduce a correction to the law, because all the associations in the north are united to respond to this betrayal,” Portela Rosa, who represents the VianaPesca co-operative of fish producers in Viana do Castelo, with around 450 members, tells Lusa. According to the fishermen, the Affectation Plan for Offshore Renewable Energies (PAER), published last week, jeopardises “the largest fishing ground off Viana do Castelo, the so-called Viana secos”. more >>CLICK TO READ<< 11:44

A Life Remembered: Captain John Allen Baker,1955 2025

It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our precious brother, Captain John Allen Baker, age 69 who lost his life at sea February 7, 2025. John was born December 9, 1955, in Canso, Nova Scotia to Calvin Howard Baker and Virginia Margaret O’Hearn. Having no biological children, we wish to acknowledge his commitment to his stepchildren, step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved them all, would wrap them in a wonderful hug and generously shared all his resources (including free fish) with them. John’s career and entire life was devoted to the Commercial Offshore Fishery.  There is so much more about John that most will never know. He shared his talents, knowledge and passion with anyone who was interested and mentored many fishermen during his life. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 10:05

Western Flyer relics go to auction this week

The sharp bang of an auctioneer’s gavel, due to sound Thursday, Feb. 13, in Berkeley, California, could echo locally. A Wauna man seems a bit anxious. He’s nursing a years-long emotional tie to the formerly junk-piled maritime items for sale, not to mention a financial stake in the auction outcome. “I’m on pins and needles,” Michael Hemp told Gig Harbor Now last week. A Northern California man, the original salvager and owner of the items for the last 49 years, has a lesser emotional tie to the relics. But he maintains hopeful anticipation for a far bigger slice of a potential cash pie. Because the objects Fry, then a teenager, rescued from a scrap heap in Alaska are original parts of the “Western Flyer,” perhaps the most famous fishing boat in the world.
