Sunken fishing boat shifts into deeper water in Salish Sea leaking fuel in orca habitat
An update from the U.S. Coast Guard says the 15-metre F/V Aleutian Isle has shifted since it went down Saturday off Washington state, near San Juan Island, roughly 25 kilometres east of Victoria. The vessel, loaded with about 10,000 litres of diesel and oil, was originally resting in about 30 metres of water, but U.S. officials say it is now some 60 metres below the surface. The coast guard says the added depth presents more logistical challenges that the on-scene dive team is working to resolve. Divers are also trying to gather and remove a large fishing net that has floated free of the wreck and the Coast Guard update says officials are watching the area closely even though no marine mammals have been reported nearby. >click to read< 17:55
Baie Verte fisherman says fall crab fishery experiment a success
It was a tough year mentally and financially for offshore fisherman Jamie Seymour, but he was more than happy to get a late-season boost. The Baie Verte man was one of the fish harvesters able to participate in an experimental fall crab fishery this year. The 3K Fall Crab Meat Yield Project was successful for Seymour. As one of the harvesters in NAFO 3K Area 4 with at least 25 per cent of their 2017 crab quota remaining, he was eligible to catch up to 10,000 pounds of crab using 400 pots,,, click here to read the story 16:40
Well, Here’s one way to get rid of construction debris! – State, CCA, companies team up to make artificial reef
Construction began Friday on a new artificial reef in Vermilion Bay that will stretch eight acres. Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana has gotten together with Shell Oil Co., the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Roadrock Recycling and D&L Salvage and Marine to build the reef, is using 10,000 tons of recycled brick and concrete from an old sugar mill in Baldwin, which helps keep the project’s costs down. continued@ dailyiberian
