Research vessel departs for study of ‘black hole’ of Hudson Bay

With an extensive refit complete, the William Kennedy will leave the port of Summerside, P.E.I., Wednesday to explore one of the most understudied regions of the Arctic — Hudson Bay. “Despite being Canada’s largest ocean watershed, the Hudson Bay is like a black hole in terms of scientific knowledge with large gaps in oceanographic and near shore studies,” Adrian Schimnowski, CEO of Arctic Research Foundation, one of the operators of the boat, said in a news release. William Kennedy is a converted deep-sea crab fishing vessel. The refit, which was done in Summerside, cost $2 million. >click to read<09:25

Crab boat White Diamond gets $2 million refit in Summerside, transformed to Arctic research vessel

A P.E.I. fishermen is putting his deep-sea crab boat to a new use — scientific research in Canada’s High Arctic. Arctic Research Foundation just finished a $2 million renovation to the boat White Diamond in the Summerside harbour. The Manitoba-based not-for-profit organization bought the boat from fisherman David McIsaac. McIsaac and his son Daniel have been working with the foundation in recent years. White Diamond is one of three research vessels now owned and operated by Arctic Research Foundation. click here to read the story 16:36

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
