TriNav Marine Design’s battery powered fishing boat wins $500K efficiency competition

A marine engineering company based in Newfoundland and Labrador has won the grand prize of a government competition to design a more full-efficient inshore fishing boat in Atlantic Canada. TriNav Marine Design of St. John’s was one of three finalists,,, Henry Demone, a former CEO of High Liner Foods, chaired the selection committee for the competition, He said TrivNav’s design is more efficient but has similar characteristics to the type of vessels that fishermen use today. “We didn’t want to choose a winner that fishermen would have difficulty considering when they upgrade their vessels,” >click to read< 18:24

Here’s how to get a piece of $62.5 million in fish processors’ Coronavirus aid

It’s been two months since the federal government rolled out a $62.5-million aid package to support seafood processors affected by Coronavirus, and a $469 million program to aid fish harvesters. So far no one has seen a cent of funding from either package. Today, June 16, seafood processing companies are a little closer. Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, announced details of how the $62.5 million from the Canadian Seafood Stabilization Fund (CSSF) will be divvied up across Canada, and how to apply. Death of 2.6 million salmon in Newfoundland reignites debate over fish farming

Fishing captain Gary Snooks pulls his boat alongside a fish cage in Fortune Bay off the southern coast of Newfoundland.  A chunky, pink plume covers the water. Arnold’s Cove company investing $10M in high-tech plant

The president and CEO of Icewater Seafoods in Arnold’s Cove wants more cod.,, He said his company is investing $10 million over three years to buy the latest cod-processing technology, and claims Icewater is the only North American processor dedicated full-time to Atlantic cod production. Seventy-five per cent of the $10 million is coming in the form of conditionally repayable loans from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Atlantic Fisheries Fund. >click to read< 09:56

Land Based Fish farm gets cash injection

Ottawa is pumping $1 million into Hants County’s Sustainable Blue’s fish farming operation to boost production of Atlantic salmon and commercialize cutting-edge marine water treatment technology. Federal funding will allow the company to build a 300-metric tonne land-based saltwater grow-out facility, which will bring its total capacity to 500 metric tonnes. This will allow production of Atlantic salmon year-round. In making the announcement, Kings-Hants MP Scott Brison said the money from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency will benefit the self-contained aquaculture operation, which is the first facility of its type in the world growing drug-free fish, produced sustainably on land. click here to read the story 11:17
