David R. “Heavy D” Sutherland, 47, of Gloucester passed away suddenly when his fishing vessel became distressed in an ocean storm. He was the loving companion to Susie Byrd with whom he shared 8 years of companionship. He was a hard- working, beloved fisherman in the Gloucester Community for many years and was the Captain of the Fishing Vessel Orin C. He began his love for fishing and catching lobster many years ago on the Saugus River. David S. Oakes has set sail for his final port.
South Thomaston — David S. “Oakesey” Oakes, 46, a true captain and hero, died doing what he loved, off the shores of Cape Ann in Massachusetts, after saving his son-in-law Jason’s life, Friday Oct. 25, 2013. Born in Rockland, Aug. 31, 1967, he was the son of Bernard “Sonny” Jr. and Elizabeth Scott Oakes. Educated locally, he was a 1986 graduate of Rockland District High School.
