Point Pleasant fisherman James N. Mathews has passed away
James Nestor Mathews passed away on December 4th, 2024 after 80 years of living life to its fullest. Jimmy spent over 60 years doing what he enjoyed most, catching fish from his home port of Point Pleasant NJ. He was born on October 9 th , 1944 in East Orange NJ and moved with his parents and siblings to Point Pleasant, NJ in 1956. It was there that Jimmy’s life long love of fishing took root, as he started working with his dad on his party boat the Flying Fish in the early 1960’s. During those early years with his father, Jimmy became interested in the local commercial fishing scene, and learned how to gill net, along with his life long friend Joey Pierce on a small skiff operated by Adolph Lovgren. It wasn’t long before Jimmy and Joey bought their own Skiffs to pursue the American dream. After a few years Jimmy was ready to move into a bigger boat and bought the Five Devils in 1971, a 57-foot-long dragger that worked out of the Fisherman’s Dock Co-op. Lobster Legend William V. (Billy) Wyss, of South Kingstown, RI has passed away
William V. (Billy) Wyss, 69, of South Kingstown RI passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024 with his family lovingly by his side. As with everything in his life, he put his all into his fight for life during which time he did his very best to hold onto his infectious sense of humor and will be remembered for his amazing example of courage and hope. William, who spent his life providing and caring for the ones he loved will be remembered for his love of lobstering of which he was a legend spanning some 60 years and his ability to plan and create anything he put his mind to, including the majority of his 10 lobster boats and numerous construction projects which will stand as a testament to his many talents. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 17:14
Nautical tributes for Aberdeen trawlerman Johnny Winton
John Munro Winton – always known as Johnny, was born on June 7 1935 in Aberdeen. Son of trawler fisherman William Winton and his wife Margaret, Johnny had two brothers and a sister. On leaving Hilton Academy he followed in his father’s footsteps, and by 15 he was going to sea on the same vessel as his dad. A family man, although tired when he was at home after extended periods of time away at sea, Johnny made sure he was present for his children. Johnny retired from trawler fishing after 51 years, due to ill health. “Really what summed up dad’s retirement,” said Graham, “was the time he devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
