AquaBounty’s Stotish responds to Sobeys decision against selling GE salmon
Since the first genetically engineered salmon was sold in Canada this summer, retailers and environmental groups have stepped up their opposition to the product. After four years of review, the Canadian government declared GE salmon safe for consumption and allowed it to be sold in 2016. However, resistance has been growing,,, Retailers have responded, with Sobeys, which operates 15,000 stores across Canada, recently becoming the latest grocery chain in North America to declare that it will not be selling AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage salmon, after Loblaws and Metro declared they would not sell GE salmon earlier this year. click here to read the story 10:40
Lawsuit Challenges FDA’s Approval of Genetically Engineered Salmon
A coalition of environmental, consumer, and commercial and recreational fishing organizations has sued the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approving the first-ever genetically engineered (GE) food animal, an Atlantic salmon engineered to grow quickly. “FDA’s decision is as unlawful as it is irresponsible,” said George Kimbrell, senior attorney for Center for Food Safety and co-counsel for the plaintiffs. “This case is about protecting our fisheries and ocean ecosystems from the foreseeable harms of the first-ever GE fish, harms FDA refused to even consider, let alone prevent. But it’s also about the future of our food: FDA should not, and cannot, responsibly regulate this GE animal, nor any future GE animals, by treating them as drugs under a 1938 law.” Read the article, Click here 17:15
Seattle salmon fishing industry reacts to FDA approval of genetically engineered salmon
On Thursday the FDA ruled genetically engineered salmon are just as safe to eat as any other salmon. The news was not well received at Seattle’s Fisherman’s Terminal. “I think it’s a horrible idea,” said Spencer Anderson, who is a commercial fisherman with his father based out of Fisherman’s Terminal. “It kind of feels like they’re choosing the salmon as a guinea pig,” said Paula Cassidy, owner of Wild Salmon Seafood Market.
