Small Fishing Vessel Code enters into force – Updated vessel inspection requirement

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency Code of Practice for Small Fishing Vessels now includes a requirement for fishing boats to be inspected both in and out of the water every five years. Previously, the requirement was only for fishing boats to be inspected in the water when first joining the UK Ship Register and after that inspected either in or out of the water once every five years. Between 2012-2020 there were 52 fishing fatalities which translates to a figure of 50 fishermen in every 100,000 losing their lives at work. There are about 12,000 fishermen and 5,400 fishing vessels in the UK fleet. >click to read<12:39

New fishing vessel certifying authority sails into post with familiar face at the helm

The Maritime Coastguard Agency has appointed a new fishing vessel certifying authority. The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors, presided over by Grimsby-based Allan Larsen, has taken over the role from Seafish. The new service launches this month. Larsen, managing director and principal surveyor in his eponymous business, Larsen’s Marine Surveyors and Consultants Ltd, said it was an exciting expansion of the portfolio of technical marine services held by the 100 year old non-profit organisation. Plymouth fishermen to get GPS lifejackets to prevent tragedies at sea

Plymouth City Council has ordered 250 lifejackets with built-in locators, which give off distress signals to help identify the exact location of crews in the event of an emergency. The tragic death of popular fisherman Tony Jones, whose body was discovered after The Solstice capsized about nine miles from Plymouth last month, provided a stark reminder of the dangers of the job. After applying for funding last September, the council has been awarded £77,000 from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and the Maritime Management Organisation for the scheme, which it is hoped will help reduce loss of life and accidents within the local fishing industry. click here to read the story 16:12

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
