How a stolen shrimp boat ended up on an SC sandbar
Charlie Werner left his shrimp boat alone for maybe 15 hours on Halloween weekend, but it was enough time for the vessel to go missing, stolen in the dead of night. Werner discovered his boat, the Lila Lee, missing from the Marlin Quay Marina midday on Oct. 31, and camera footage later showed a man hop from another boat into this before taking off around 12 a.m. earlier that day. He reported the 40-foot boat missing to police that day. Murrells Inlet fishing community celebrates life of pioneer who passed unexpectedly
The fishing village of Murrells Inlet recently lost a true pioneer with the death of Phil Conklin, a fisherman extraordinaire and longtime owner of Seven Seas Seafood, located right on U.S. 17 Business in the inlet. Conklin passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on June 13 at the age of 71. Five days later a crowd of about 300 family and friends, including a who’s who in the Murrells Inlet fishing and restaurant industries, celebrated his life at Creek Ratz on the inlet’s Marshwalk. The Celebration of Life was indeed a party, complete with an open bar for attendees, per Phil Conklin’s request. His son, Chris Conklin, found a note hand-written by his dad among his closing documents that read “Don’t grieve, have a party. Bye.” >click to read<18:19
AMSEA to hold two Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Workshops in South Carolina in March
Alaska Marine Safety Education Association workshops meet the U. S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. On Thursday, March 9, a workshop will be conducted in Murrells Inlet from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Murrells Inlet Community Center, 4462 Murrells Inlet Road. A second workshop will be conducted on Saturday, March 11 in McClellanville at the McClellanville Town Office, 405 Pinckney Street. Instructor Michael Lawson will cover man-overboard recovery and firefighting, emergency position-indicating radio beacon stations, flares and maydays, emergency drills, helicopter rescue, life rafts and abandon ship procedures, personal floatation devices, immersion suits and cold-water survival skills. The workshop will include an “in-the-water” practice session for participants to practice survival skills. Murrells Inlet fundraiser set for Lost at Sea Memorial Saturday, Sept. 10th
People who would like to support the Lost at Sea Memorial in Murrells Inlet will gather at the Big Beaver Bar for a fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 10. The event, which will features food, live music, raffles, door prizes and a silent auction, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is a suggested $10 donation. “This is a benefit to help the memorial and continue adding names as necessary,” said event organizer Gary Pew. “It is for a good local cause.” The Lost at Sea Memorial is located at Morse Park Landing in Murrells Inlet. He said he attended the last Lost at Sea Memorial service held in April with a friend who lost her son at sea. He found out that more funds are needed to maintain the monument and add names each year. According to the Lost at Sea Memorial website, it was established in April of 2005 by the family of Johnny W. Brown. He was a native of Horry County and a commercial fisherman out of Murrells Inlet. Read the story here 13:33
Lost at Sea memorial service a decade strong
On Easter Sunday, a small group of people gathered around a granite Lost at Sea monument overlooking the marsh in Murrells Inlet. Since 2005, a special ceremony has been held on the first Sunday in April each year to honor those killed at sea. Thirty names have been added to the Lost at Sea memorial during that time, but this year, no new names were added. Read the rest here 08:09
Video: High winds hurting commercial fishing industry on the Grand Strand
MURRELLS INLET, S.C, The commercial fishing industry is how Reese Hair has been making a living for more than 30 years. Tuesday afternoon, he was at the dock because 15 foot waves were keeping him from doing his job on the ocean. Mershon said the big problem is while commercial fisherman in the Inlet are stuck on the docks, other fisherman from North Carolina to the Florida Keys may be catching the quota in calmer conditions.
