Commercial Fisherman Michael Alan Doyle of Wakefield, R.I. has passed away
Michael Alan Doyle, 64, of Wakefield, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 22, 2022 surrounded by his adoring family. Mike loved and respected the ocean with a deep passion. He started lobstering as an early teenager and began fishing commercially soon after. Mike was the proud owner of the F/V Seafarer and the F/V Charlie’s Pride for over 30 years, leaving behind his friend and Captain Scott Smith. His family knows he is happy to be reunited with his best friend and Captain Charlie Niles. Mike Doyle was the salt of the Earth. He was a kindhearted, loyal, and selfless man. He built a longer table instead of a higher fence. There was always room for everyone at Mike’s table and in his enormous heart. Commercial Fisherman Clifford M. Sambrook, Jr., of Narragansett, R.I. has passed away
Clifford M. Sambrook, Jr., 66, of Narragansett, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Derby, CT, he was the son of Harriet E. Sambrook and the late Clifford M. Sambrook, Sr. Besides his mother, he is survived by his partner Susan Chandler of Narragansett RI, and his two sons Kenneth Sambrook of Georgetown TX and Clifford and Elizabeth Sambrook of Boynton Beach FL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 7th, 2022, at 10 AM in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Point Judith Rd, Narragansett. Military Honors will follow. Burial will be private. Michael F. Champlin 70, of Narragansett, passed away on Thursday, November 18th, 2021 at home. Mike was a Commercial Fisherman for many years and retired from the Bait Company in 2015 after 20 years of dedicated attention and care. Commercial Lobsterman Norbert B. Stamps Jr., of Charlestown, R.I., has passed away
Born on March 15, 1956 in Providence, RI, he was the husband of Patricia A. (Eastman) Stamps and the son of the late Norbert B. Sr. and Margaret (O’Neil) Stamps. At age 13, Norbert was fishing for striped bass with his father in Narragansett Bay and hooked something quite heavy with his fishing pole. At the end of the line was a lobster trap completely full of lobsters. From that moment on, he knew he wanted to be a fisherman. That winter he was in his basement building lobster traps. He then started to build a 26-foot skiff in the family’s backyard on Lennon Street in Providence which was completed upon graduating from Our Lady of Providence High School (OLP) in 1974. He became a full-time commercial lobsterman. During his career, he owned several 40 ft boats, owned his pride and joy 75 ft boat named after his two oldest boys, Brendan and Kevin, and was partners with Jay and David Gallup running an 80 ft boat. >click, read more about this beloved man< 11:02
Unexpected Changes – Backlash from lobster industry and elected officials on restrictions, closures
Barry Baudanza hadn’t had the chance to fully absorb all the changes headed his way after federal officials announced new rules governing the lobster industry the day before, but he knew one thing right off the bat: “This was the worst-case scenario.” But lobstermen, the fishing industry and elected officials are pushing back. They say the new rules will be expensive, dangerous, burdensome and impractical, and won’t reduce the risk to whales. 16 proposed laws that could be on the Massachusetts ballot in 2022 – # 10, Proposed by a conservationist known as the “Prince of Whales,” the ballot question would “ban the use of commercial fishing gear likely to entangle whales and sea turtles.” State officials would have to determine exactly which gear falls into that category, but anything that “employs vertical buoy ropes or gill nets would be prohibited.” >click to read<
Daniel Harrington of North Kingstown, R.I., a lifelong commercial fisherman, has passed away
Daniel Harrington, 57, of North Kingstown passed away peacefully on June 22, 2021 surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. Born in Warwick, he was the son of the late Gerald T. Harrington Jr and Sonia (Smith) Reed. Danny spent a lot of time at his grandparent’s beachfront home in Wickford where he found appreciation for everything about the ocean and fishing. He was a lifelong commercial fisherman, working out of Wickford, Point Judith, and Marathon, Florida. Danny was one of a kind and a friend to all who knew him. >click to read< 10:32
Lost trawler Mistress found on sea floor
The Point Judith, R.I., trawler Mistress, which sank in foul weather on New Year’s Day morning and triggered a large Coast Guard search for two of its crew, has been located, according to Richard Fuka, Rhode Island Fishermen’s Alliance president. Fuka said he’s been in regular contact with Michael Ansay, uncle of John Ansay, who along with the Mistress’s owner, Oscar Diaz, went missing when the trawler sank; both are presumed not to have survived.
