How fisherman’s son defied odds to fly UN planes, become flying instructor

Joseph Otialuk, 34, was among the 31 pilots who graduated from the East African Civil Aviation Academy (EACAA) in Soroti on Friday last week. Otialuk is the firstborn in a family of 12 children from Mugarama village in Labor sub-county in Serere district. His father, Peter Mwanika, is a fisherman and his mother, Peretua Anyago, is a housewife. Otialuk’s interest in piloting started in 1999 when the then army commander Gen Jeje Odongo, landed a helicopter in Pingire sub county. Otialuk had only known fishing before enrolling in school, having accompanied his father on fishing trips since he was eight. Leslie “Buddy” Rose, 81, of Harkers Island has passed away

Leslie Roger “Buddy” Rose was born July 15, 1939, to Leslie and Christine Rose on Harkers Island, being the first son after seven daughters. Six more children followed Leslie. His father, Leslie, was a commercial fisherman with Stacy Davis for at least 20 years. Times were hard for a family that size on a fisherman’s pay.  As a teenager, he commercial fished with Ivey Gaskill,,,  He and his wife Ann decided to take a chance on starting his own boatbuilding business. It was tough starting with nothing, especially that first year or so, but eventually things improved.  Leslie built 62 boats over a 17-year period, sending boats as far north as Massachusetts and as far south as Florida. >click to read< 19:04

Taylor Strout is the son of a fisherman; fishing simply runs in his blood. He is on a boat that fishes out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska,,, Taylor is a mate aboard the Fishing Vessel Northern Defender which, when we talked, was tied up at the dock in Dutch Harbor. The Aleutian Islands split the Pacific   Ocean and the Bering Sea, and they fish the Bering Sea. As the crow flies, he is more than 4000 miles away from home. “It’s kind of a different level of  fishing out here.,,  “You’re basically towing a football field behind you. You’re taking everything up to a bigger scale when you’re on some of these boats. Bigger weather, there’s bigger seas, sometimes we fish in 15 foot waves to 25 foot waves.” >click to read< 14:44
