My View – Back to proven port basics
The future of our 399-year-old port community, our ocean-centric culture, is bring maltreated by astonishing contradictions, some plain self-serving against the good of our community, others just embarrassingly incoherent. There are folks who will claim that fishing is “near the end” with “not enough biomass,” with some fishers even declaring near tears that “we are the last generation,” while the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science & Technology offers science that lucrative fish species are actually dying of old age in the fertile Atlantic, as the industry remains without advanced catch technology to very selectively harvest only those species in ample abundance. >click to read< 07:52
City tells longtime Gloucester activist activist to stay away from 2 city officials
Longtime Gloucester activist Susanne Altenburger has been told by the city’s lawyer that she can no longer contact two of its officials by phone. And if she wants a face-to-face meeting with them, a city police officer must also be present. General counsel Charles “Chip” Payson notified Altenburger of the policy earlier this month in two letters sent on behalf of Economic Development Director Sal Di Stefano and Fisheries Commission Director Al Cottone. The letters came after Di Stefano and Cottone were granted harassment prevention orders against Altenburger on June 24. The court orders — which barred Altenburger from any contact with Di Stefano and Cottone for two weeks — were vacated by Judge Joseph Jennings III on July 8, after neither man showed up to press for a renewal. Both men said in sworn affidavits that Altenburger, an outspoken advocate for boat building and other issues regarding Gloucester’s harbor and working waterfront, made them fear for their safety. In his affidavit, Di Stefano said he believes Altenburger owns a gun and has a concealed-carry permit, a charge she denies. Read the story here 14:09
Susanne Altenburger’s Green ‘Boat in a crate’ takes to the water
A newly built 39-foot boat that fits neatly into a 40-foot shipping container has been making a splash on its maiden voyages in Gloucester Harbor in recent weeks. At the helm is Susanne Altenburger, Gloucester boat-designer , who put in about two-thirds of the man-hours it took to build the boat. The boat design took shape after the U.S. Navy had talked to Altenburger and her late husband, Phil Bolger, about creating a prototype of a versatile boat. Read the rest here 08:14
Susanne Altenburger — The only way out that’s left, Combining groundfish ecology with fleet economics
You’d figure that this is just another colorful waterfront tale, here of improbable schemes hatched by folks of grand ambitions fiercely pursuing 50 percent visions — to never quite succeed, despite rich claims of “institutional authority,” “legitimate interest-representation,” defining “industrial policies” under whatever fractured grasp of “ecology.” And it would be a fine yarn, indeed — had not our Resource-Ecology and our Fleet-&-Port Economics been damaged to the great cost to businesses, too many families, our communities.
