Cork fishermen to sue The Guardian over migrant workers article
Two Cork Fishermen are suing The Guardian over an article published on its website in November. Lenny Hyde and Pat O’Mahony have taken a defamation case against Guardian News & Media concerning an article that reported on the treatment of migrant workers in the fishing industry in Ireland. The article was published on theguardian.com on 2 November. Part of the report outlines claims made by a native of the Philippines about his time working on a fishing boat in Ireland. Fishermen may sue over “The Guardian” newspaper’s migrants claims
The move follows allegations made in The Guardian newspaper that non-EU workers had been underpaid and forced to live on their boats and banned from going ashore. More serious allegations of human trafficking were also made. “The article itself bears out the lack of detailed evidence that you would expect to support such allegations. It cannot be overlooked how serious those allegations are and the scrutiny they have brought to bear on the fishing industry. A government working group is to examine allegations of abuse in Ireland’s fishing industry.
MOST UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS trafficked into Ireland’s fishing industry are not eligible for work permits, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton has said. Bruton was speaking following calls by the Irish Fish Producers Association (IFPA) to regularise the employment status of African and Asian migrants allegedly working as cheap labour on Irish trawlers. A year-long investigation published in The Guardian yesterday alleged that undocumented workers often work on Irish vessels for days on end without any sleep or basic safety training.
