Jersey Trawler Sinking – Bail granted for Ukrainian National accused of manslaughter
A 34-year-old man charged with three counts of manslaughter in relation to the sinking of the L’Ecume II trawler has been granted bail. Ukrainian national Artur Sevash-Zade is charged in connection with the deaths of skipper Michael Michieli and crewmembers Jervis Baligat and Larry Simyunn. The three men died when their fishing vessel, L’Ecume II, collided with Condor’s Commodore Goodwill freight ship on 8 December 2022. Second man charged over L’Ecume II sinking
A second man has been charged with connection with the States of Jersey Police investigation into the collision between the Jersey trawler L’Ecume II and the Condor ferry Commodore Goodwill on 8 December, 2022 that resulted in the loss of all three trawler crew. Lewis Peter Carr (29), a UK resident, appeared before Jersey Magistrates’ Court at the end of July and will appear before Jersey’s Royal Court on 27 September. His arrest follows that of Artur Sevash-Zade (34), a Ukranian national, on 3 July (FN, 18 July, ‘Manslaughter charges over L’Ecume II deaths’). Body formally identified as L’Ecume II skipper
Police in Jersey have confirmed the body recovered from the wreck of a sunken fishing boat has been formally identified as Michael Michieli. Mr Michieli, 62, was the skipper of the L’Ecume II fishing trawler that sank after colliding with a freight ferry on 8 December. The bodies of the two other crew, Larry Simyunn and Jervis Baligat, were recovered later that month. The Michieli family has been informed, police said. They added: “Our deepest sympathies are with the Michieli family, and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.” >click to read< 15:34
Salvors to Raise Trawler that Sank Following Deadly Collision off Jersey
The wreckage of the trawler L’Ecume II, which sank in Jersey waters on December 8, 2022 following a collision with a commercial cargo vessel, is to be raised for evidential and humanitarian reasons, the Jersey government confirmed via an official statement. The States of Jersey Police made the recommendation to raise the wreck as it may assist in both the forensic and overall investigation. The collision involving L’Ecume II and the Condor Ferries Ro-Ro Commodore Goodwill occurred at 05:30 local time on December 8. The trawler sank shortly afterwards with its crew of three still on board. Search and rescue/recovery teams pulled the bodies of Filipino crewmen Jervis Baligat and Larry Simyunn out of the water in the days following the sinking. No trace of Micheal Michieli, the boat’s captain, has yet been found. >click to read< 09:07
