Student Lobstermen Complete Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Training

Student lobstermen from Bremen, Bristol and South Bristol attended the U.S. Coast Guard approved Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Training and Certification course provided through a cooperative effort between Maine Maritime Academy and McMillan Offshore Survival Training.,, Before a student lobsterman can purchase a license, they are required to successfully complete this course and complete a fishing log that includes in a minimum of 24 months, 200 fishing days and 1,000 hours. Port of Bellingham – First aid course specifically for fisherman May 9

Fishermen can learn first aid for situations they encounter on water during a special course May 9. The course, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, will cover CPR, patient assessment, hypothermia, cold water, near drowning, shock, trauma, burns, fractures, choking, immobilization and key components in first aid kits. The course is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Port of Bellingham Squalicum Harbor office, 722 Coho Way. The fee is $100, or $50 for active commercial fishermen. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
