After witness recants, jury acquits lobsterman of ordering sinking of competitor’s boat
A Knox County jury deliberated for more than an hour Tuesday before clearing a Tenants Harbor lobsterman accused of paying his former sternman to sink a competitor’s boat. The jury found Alan B. Norwood Jr., 48, not guilty of felony aggravated criminal mischief in connection to the Sept. 1, 2016 sinking of the 36-foot lobster boat Oracle, owned by Joshua Hupper, off St. George. St. George sternman admits to sinking rival’s lobster boat
A St. George man was sentenced Thursday, March 2 to 24 months in prison for sinking a competitor’s lobster boat last summer. Vincent Hilt, 22, pleaded guilty during a hearing in Knox County Unified Court to felony charges of aggravated criminal mischief and felony theft. Hilt is the second person convicted of the Sept.1 sinking of the 36-foot lobster boat Oracle owned by Joshua Hupper of St. George. In January, 21-year-old Devlin Meklin of Warren admitted to the same charges as Hilt and was sentenced to 24 months with all but three months suspended. The case against Hilt’s captain — Alan B. Norwood Jr., 47, of St. George — remains pending in court. St. George lobsterman charged in sinking of rival’s boat
According to documents filed in Knox County Unified Court, Alan B. Norwood, 47, of St. George, was charged with aggravated criminal mischief, class C, for allegedly paying two others, Vincent Hilt, 22, of Vinalhaven, and Devin Meklin, 20, of Warren, to sink a boat owned by another lobsterman, Josh Hupper. In interviews at Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Hilt and Meklin admitted to stealing the skiff and using it to get out to Hupper’s boat, which they then sank. They said Norwood had offered them $500 to sink the boat. Both have been charged with aggravated criminal mischief and theft. Norwood had told the Marine Patrol that he did not pay anyone to sink Hupper’s boat. Two bumbling hired thugs arrested for allegedly sinking a lobster boat in trap turf war
Two people are in jail and a third man is expected to be charged for the intentional sinking of a lobster boat last week. This is the second sinking of a lobster boat in the town in the past few weeks. Vincent Hilt, 22, of Vinalhaven, and Devlin Meklin, 20, of Warren were arrested and charged with felony criminal mischief and felony theft. Hilt was arrested Friday afternoon and Meklin on Monday morning. Both remain at the Knox County Jail in Rockland. According to an affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the 36-foot lobster boat owned by Joshua Hupper sank during the early morning of Sept. 1 where it was moored off Tenants Harbor.
