R.I. squid fishermen fear wind power

Rhode Island fishermen say a patch of the Atlantic Ocean south of Martha’s Vineyard is among the best places around to catch squid. They are also the same waters in which a developer selected by Massachusetts plans to install up to 100 giant wind turbines that would supply clean, renewable energy to the state. Now, Rhode Island coastal regulators and the state’s fishing community are raising concerns that the offshore wind farm that Vineyard Wind wants to build in 250 square miles of federally-owned ocean may affect access to the squid grounds that are critical to the Point Judith fleet. >click to read<09:13

These have been “popular Squid fishing areas”, not only in 2015 and 2016, but, for over 50 years (and probably before that)—as they were in 2017 and are today! RI and other East Coast Squid Fishermen don’t “fear wind power”; they fear hundreds of these 650 foot to (the latest models) 800 foot tall monstrosities, stupidly plopped right on the most important spawning and fishing grounds of one of the most important and vital fisheries on the East Coast. SQUID!!!

No, it’s not that fishermen are in love with handing over 25% to 40% (the price to fishing vessels dependent on OPEC’s and Exxon Mobil’s prevailing mood) of their yearly revenues to the oil barons. It’s not that fishermen are afraid of “wind power” or solar, or clean fuels from algae based biodiesel; or fear fuels from promising but grossly underfunded experimental sources such as artificial photosynthesis.

With a fraction of the money the government is squandering on this offshore wind boondoggle, transportation, shipping, industrial equipment, and fishing vessels, for example, could be running on biodiesel-electric power, resulting in drastically reduced emissions and consumption—which would be good for all involved.

What MA and RI and CT, NY, NJ, VA, and NC fishermen DO fear is losing their livliehood to a graft-laden, government colluded, hedge fund cajolled, offshore wind investment scam that will benefit only a few politicians’ claim to fame (and future elections), and of course hedge fund investors’ and wind company shysters’ profit margin. These are “players” who really don’t need to get any richer, and who really don’t care how it affects anyone!

BTW, agencies like BOEM and their Public Relations mouthpieces (don’t forget their “oversight” of Deepwater Horizon) are as graft corrupt as the day is long!

These structures will affect the SW breeze fetch and wave action—essential for spawn and general ecosystem health! Where are all the NOAA “ecosystem managemnet specialists” one this one???

And where are the charter-captains-to-the-stars from the Vineyard and Nantucket “Stop the Industrial Trawlers from taking all the Striped Bass’ Squid Forage Fish” campaign on this “invasion of their Islands”?

Oh yes, and Sylvia Earle why aren’t you fighting this “Industrial Destruction of the Fish Habitat Bottom”???

    Money Talks…Eh?
