F/V Terry F runs into serious trouble, Coast Guard rescues crew and a dog, vessel breaks up, Fundraiser!

The crabber F/V Terry F ran into life-threatening trouble near the north end of the peninsula Saturday morning in the first hours of the Dungeness 73-hour pre-soak period. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three crewmembers after the vessel reportedly lost power and began taking on water at about 7:30 a.m. about 4 miles offshore from the mouth of Willapa Bay.,, They instructed the crew to enter the water one at a time to meet a rescue swimmer. All three were wearing survival suits and communication gear. The commercial crab season started Saturday morning when boats were allowed to set their pots offshore. Inside the F/V Saputi: Crew member’s video shows waterlogged vessel

Photos and video from a man rescued from the fishing vessel Saputi show the extent of the damage inside the ship and the dire situation that the crew had faced in the Davis Strait last week. While fishing for turbot and shrimp on Feb. 23, the Saputi began taking on water after striking ice, causing the hull to open up. A Hercules aircraft from 413 squadron dropped off four extra pumps to remove water from the vessel, while another Hercules monitored the Saputi as it travelled to Greenland. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
