Updated: Crew member on Alaska factory trawler dies after possible ammonia exposure
A crew member on an American Seafoods factory trawler died at sea last week, likely from an ammonia leak on board. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class John Highwater said that they received a satellite call from the Northern Eagle at about 4 a.m. on Aug. 18. “One of their crew members was found unresponsive in one of their engineering spaces,” Highwater said. “They believe there was an ammonia leak somewhere in the vessel that caused the person to fall unconscious.” Jeremy Baum, the Alaska Wildlife Trooper stationed in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, identified the crew member as First Engineer David Kumah from Ghana in West Africa. >click to read< 13:09
Quick Action of Crew Member Saved Fishing Skipper’s Life
The quick action of a crew member on a Donegal fishing vessel probably saved the life of his skipper when his arm was trapped by a trawl door, an investigation has found. The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) report into the incident involving the whitefish trawler F/V Marliona has noted that the trawl door was not secured adequately and that it was in the wrong position. Injured F/V Patricia Lee fisherman medevac’d 200 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska
The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a fishing boat Tuesday approximately 200 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak hoisted an injured fisherman from the 117-foot, commercial fishing vessel F/V Patricia Lee at about 11:50 p.m. He was flown to Dutch Harbor and placed in the care of LifeMed personnel. Watchstanders in the 17th District command center in Juneau received the initial request for the the medevac from the F/V Patricia Lee at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Fishing vessel crew member alleges inadequate medical treatment after cutting hand with machete
Nicholas A. Lester filed a complaint June 28 in Galveston County 56th District Court against Katie’s Seafood LLC and the F/V Pisces LLC alleging negligence, unseaworthiness and other claims. According to his complaint, Lester was employed by the defendants and was a crew member on the F/V Bottom Line commercial fishing vessel which was operating in the Gulf of Mexico on April 14, 2021. He claims that as he was chopping eels to prep for baiting hooks, he cut his left hand with the machete and began to bleed “profusely.” Lester further claims that he received no assistance from crew members until a half hour later when the vessel’s captain treated his wound with iodine and Gorilla Glue and wrapped it with gauze and electrical tape. >click to read< 08:41
Missing fisherman’s house burns down
Hours after authorities suspended the at-sea search for the captain of a Newport fishing vessel, his Logsden house and an adjacent building caught fire and burned to the ground. The structure fire call came in at 5:13 p.m. Sunday,,, The fire compounded tragedy for a local family. The house and shop, on the site of a Christmas tree farm, were owned by fisherman Mike Morgan, whose boat capsized at around midnight Saturday off the coast of Florence. Robert Lester Odom stabbed the captain of the fishing vessel on which he was a crew member is prison bound
A Florida man, who stabbed the captain of a commercial ship of whose crew he was a part, was sentenced on Friday to 40 months in prison. Robert Lester Odom, 47, of Pensacola, Florida, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon with the intention of causing bodily harm. Odom’s, who was a crew member of a commercial shipping vessel, stabbed the captain of the vessel in high seas. “This vicious attack was made even more serious due to the vessel’s location, so far away from help,” said Lawrence Keefe, US Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, in a statement. >click to read< 12:54
Desperate search continues 40 miles off coast as families of fishermen hold on to hope
The families and friends of two missing commercial fishermen are holding out hope that the two men will be found after their boat began taking on water and vanished early Thursday in international waters about 40 miles off the New Jersey coast. Crew member, employer receive citations for falsified fishing license
A Washington man was cited for employing an unlicensed crew member when authorities discovered that the crew member’s commercial fishing license was falsified. According to Wildlife Troopers in Dutch Harbor, Michael L. James of Townsend Montana was in possession of a duplicated commercial crew member’s license while aboard the F/V Gulf Prowler.
