For commercial fishermen, November is the cruelest month

November trips can be treacherous, and the forecast was unnerving, 9-foot swells in the afternoon and gusts as strong as 40 miles per hour. But the 56-foot F/V Leonardo, its diesel engines groaning after a series of repairs, steamed out to fishing grounds 24 miles southwest of Martha’s Vineyard. It would not return, and three fishermen, Mark Cormier Jr., Gerald Bretal, and his step-son Xavier Vega, were never found. A memorial service for a fisherman lost at sea was held at the Seamen’s Bethel in New Bedford

On Sunday, a celebration of life service was held at Seamen’s Bethel in downtown New Bedford for Mark Cormier, one of the crew from the F/V Leonardo, which capsized in November off Martha’s Vineyard. Pastor Paul Wheeler of the Trinity Lutheran Church conducts a service in celebration of the life of Mark Cormier Jr. held at the Seamen’s Bethel in New Bedford. F/V Leonardo found off Martha’s Vineyard

Fishing vessel Leonardo that capsized and sank with four fishermen aboard on Nov. 24 has been found, according to the Massachusetts Environmental Police. “We located and identified the sunken fishing vessel on Sunday morning,” Major Patrick Moran said Monday. The Leonardo is a 57-foot scalloper, based out of New Bedford. The vessel sank in choppy seas some 24 miles southwest off Martha’s Vineyard. Coast Guard suspends search for 3 missing New Bedford fishermen

The search for the three missing men was suspended Monday evening, according to officials. Owner of New Bedford vessel capsized off Martha’s Vineyard fears 3 crew members perished

Coast Guard crews from Air Station Cape Cod were continuing the search for the three missing fishermen Monday,,, Luis Martins, who owns a fish processing plant called Joe’s Fresh Seafood in New Bedford, said he has owned the 56-foot commercial fishing vessel for about five years. The fishing boat F/V Leonardo out of New Bedford sank Sunday afternoon 24 miles southwest of the Vineyard. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued one mariner from the vessel. A search and rescue operation is underway for three others. Sector Southeast New England received an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) signal at 3:18 pm, according to Petty Officer Ryan Noel.,, None of the mariners were wearing survival suits. Coast Guard crews tow disabled fishing boat near Buzzards Bay

Coast Guard crews from Stations Woods Hole and Menemsha towed the 65-foot fishing vessel Leonardo, with six people aboard, Wednesday when it became disabled after running aground in Woods Hole Pass. At approximately 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received notification via VHF-16 radio from the captain aboard Leonardo reporting they ran aground and damaged their rudder. Read the report here 12:14
