The Birds Eye Fleet
In 1954, General Foods Birdseye Division was a big part of Rockland’s waterfront. In addition to a fish processing operation on Tillson Avenue, the company had a shipyard on Mechanic Street that maintained a fleet of nine fishing boats. On the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1954, the Surf went aground on the ledges of Devil’s Limb off Seal Island, to the west of Nova Scotia. The Surf was built in 1937 and was registered at 309 tons. Her length was 132 feet with a 25-foot beam, powered by a 750-horsepower diesel. Captain Douglas Schwartz of Rockland was taking the trawler and his crew of 10 men to the Grand Banks, having left the day before at 4 p.m. It is believed the trawler’s compass was off. Lower Township man gets 38 years in murder try on boat
A Lower Township man was sentenced to 38 years in prison Thursday in the 2015 attempted murder of a woman on a boat, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. Ernest P. Davis was convicted in June of attempted murder and aggravated assault of 39-year-old Dorris Howell, of Middle Township’s Whitesboro section. Davis also was convicted of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and hindering his own prosecution, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. New Jersey man convicted of attempted murder in fish boat shooting case – faces life in prison
A man who shot a Whitesboro woman aboard a fishing vessel docked at Lund’s Fisheries in October 2015 has been convicted of attempted murder, Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor said. Ernest P. Davis, 44, also was convicted of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and hindering his own prosecution following a one-week trial in Cape May County Superior Court, Taylor said. On Oct. 3, 2015, Davis shot Doris Howell, 39, with a shotgun while aboard the fishing vessel “Storm,” which was docked in Lower Township. As a result of the shooting, Howell’s left foot and part of her calf were amputated, Taylor said. Taylor said due to the charges and Davis’s criminal history, he faces a maximum of life imprisonment with an 85 percent parole disqualifier. click here to read the story 12:22
Video Update: Coast Guard rescues 3 fishermen and a dog from disabled vessel near Wachapreague, Va
The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen and a dog Saturday after their vessel became disabled and ran aground two miles off Wachapreague Inlet. Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center in Portsmouth received notification at 2:42 a.m. Saturday that the 60-foot commercial fishing vessel Storm was soft aground near Wachapreague Inlet with three people and a dog aboard. The vessel freed itself, however two hours later the crew discovered serious damage to the rudder along with flooding. A 47-foot Motor Life Boat (MLB) crew launched from Coast Guard Station Chincoteague at 4:47 a.m. and made way toward the scene in 12-15 foot seas, arriving at 8:18 a.m. The MLB crew found Storm adrift with no way to steer the vessel. The MLB crew assessed the situation and determined a tow would not work due to the deck configuration of the fishing vessel and the sea state. The crew aboard Storm attempted to anchor the vessel to prevent it from drifting but were not successful due to the heavy weather. By this time the heavy seas made it too dangerous for a direct transfer of people between vessels. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at 12:23 p.m. The aircrew arrived on scene at 1:02 p.m., and hoisted all three people and their dog to the helicopter by 1:58 p.m. They were transported to Richmond International Airport, arriving at 2:30 p.m. Fishing vessel Storm remains unmanned and adrift with an activated EPIRB aboard and all navigational lights energized. Woman shot on fishing vessel in Port of Cape May
The New Jersey State Police said a Lower Township man was arrested for attempted murder after he shot a Whitesboro woman aboard a fishing vessel docked at Lund’s Fisheries. Capt. Stephen Jones of the State Police said Ernest Davis, 43, of Lower Township was being held in the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $1 million cash bail, charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges related to the shooting.
