German vessel’s skipper lands in court on fishing charges

The skipper of a German-registered fishing trawler is due to appear at Cork Circuit Criminal Court this week to face 25 charges of breaches of fishing regulations off the West Cork coast. Ramon Manuel Nova Martinez (57) of Corosopalmeira, Riberia, La Coruna, Spain appeared at a special sitting of Bandon District Court on Monday after his vessel Ortegal Tres, was detained by Irish authorities. Mr Martinez was charged with 17 offences for allowing his fishing nets exceed the soak time of 72 hours in respect of static gear, while he was also charged with four offences for failing to accurately record soak times as well as four charges of failing to record the depth of the catch. >click to read< 07:43

Spanish fishing captain returned for trial – to stay on his boat rather than be held at Cork Prison

A Spanish fishing captain has been returned for trial by a judge and jury after being charged on Monday with 25 alleged breaches of European Union fishing regulations in Irish waters off the southwest coast. Ramon Novo Martinez (57), Master of the Spanish owned but German registered Ortegall Tres, was brought before a special sitting of Bandon District Court following the detention of his vessel by the LÉ Samuel Beckett for alleged fishing offences in Irish waters. Mr Martinez, with an address at Corosopalmeira, Riberia, La Coruna, Spain, was charged with a total of 25 fishing offences on various dates between a date unknown in December 2022 and February 3rd 2023 while fishing within the exclusive fishing limits of the State. >click to read< 19:05

A salmon rare to this part of the world has been caught in another Donegal river

A salmon rare to this part of the world has been caught on the River Crana in Buncrana. The Pink Salmon (also known as a Humpback Salmon) was landed by well-known local angler Mickey McGrory. Abiding by the law, the fish was handed over to Irish Fisheries Ireland (IFI) inspector Peter Kelly. Pat Kane, from the Buncrana Anglers Association, said Pink Salmon in Irish waters was “very rare.” He added: “Nobody knows when the last one would have been caught, although there are ‘rumors’ one was landed by a Greencastle trawler in Lough Foyle in the 1980s. Anglers in the south of the county recently caught the rare salmon in the Drowes river. click here to read the story 14:16
