But over the last decade, commercial fishing has changed and due to government regulations, Brinkley has to keep coming up with new ways to make a profit. NOAA sets minimum size limit for parrotfish caught in St. Croix waters
The regulation has been through the public hearing process and had input from fishermen before that. Carlos Farchette, the St. Croix member of the Caribbean Fishery Management Council, told The Daily News in March that local fishermen had input on the development of the regulation. @virginislandsdailynews
August 17th is StarKist Samoa Day in American Samoa!
Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga has proclaimed August 17 as StarKist Samoa Day in honor of the cannery’s 50 years of service to American Samoa. In his proclamation, Lolo detailed the history of StarKist’s presence in the territory, from when it was a part of H.J. Heinz Company in 1963 to its acquisition by Del Monte Foods in 2002 to the time it was bought by Dongwon Industries in 2008. He said Starkist Samoa has become the single largest producing tuna cannery in the world. @talanei.com
Happy Birthday to the United States Coast Guard
Founded by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Marine first, and later as the Revenue Cutter Service on 4 August 1790, it is the United States’ oldest continuous seagoing service. Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton headed the USRCS, and the branch was involved in every war from 1790 to World War I. As of August 2009 the Coast Guard had approximately 42,000 men and women on active duty, 7,500 reservists, 30,000 auxiliarists, and 7,700 full-time civilian employees.
The fishing industry has seen much tragedy on the water in 2013.
