Provincial investment ‘absolutely necessary’ for massive Placentia Bay $230-million aquaculture project
The companies behind a massive aquaculture project proposed for say government investment is “absolutely necessary,” but Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Steve Crocker says the province will not be rushed into a decision. A spokesman for Grieg NL Nurseries and Grieg NL Seafarms told CBC News Thursday that an equity share in the $230-million project will be a “safe” investment for the province. “This is an excellent investment which will grow and pay the province back tenfold in both taxation and employment,” said Greig’s Perry Power.When asked if the project’s sanctioning hinges on an infusion of government money, Power said “my understanding has always been, in the position that I’m in, that the province’s involvement is absolutely necessary.” Grieg wants to construct the world’s largest salmon hatchery in Marystown, and create 11 “escape-proof” cage sites in Placentia Bay. Hubbs-SeaWorld is partnering with private investment firm to create the largest fish farm in America
Don Kent peers into a water tank about the size of a backyard swimming pool and watches as a school of 10 yellowtails swim by, each about 4 feet long. “There are some big guys in there. There they come,” he said. “That’s a big fish right there.” I ask if he has names for them. “I try not to have names for things I eat,” he said. Kent won’t be eating these fish, but he hopes we’ll all be chowing down on their offspring in a few years. Kent is president and CEO of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, a research nonprofit partially funded by SeaWorld. Snobby Wealthy Neighbors raise ante in oyster fight
MASHPEE — Residents opposed to a proposed oyster farm in Popponesset Bay are asking the state’s highest court to weigh in on the dispute. The homeowners’ attorney, Brian Wall of Sandwich, has filed an appeal of part of their case to the Supreme Judicial Court. Read more here 07:35
