Puppy found alive on beach after fishing boat capsizes off Sitkalidak Island

The fishing vessel F/V Laura, a 93-foot trawler based out of Kodiak, capsized Monday morning after striking rocks near Sitkalidak Island. The four-person crew safely boarded a life raft. But their puppy, Grace, an eight-month-old, 80-pound lab mix,  jumped into the freezing water and was presumed lost. The next day, another Coast Guard helicopter crew searched the area for evidence of a fuel spill from the F/V Laura, but they still held a shred of hope that Grace might still be alive. Samaritans, U.S.C.G. rescue fishing boat captain from ‘communications dead zone’ near Sitka

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka medevaced a man in cardiac distress from a fishing vessel in West Crawfish Inlet on Aug. 19. Watchstanders in Sitka received a call around 1:30 p.m. from the F/V Minke. Crew from the Minke relayed that the 68-year-old captain of another boat, the F/V Lady Cyprus, was experiencing a possible heart attack. West Crawfish Inlet is around 16 miles south of Sitka. Due to the surrounding high terrain, the inlet is considered a “communication dead zone,” and crew from the Lady Cyprus were unable to contact the Coast Guard themselves. >click to read< 14:50

F/V Bill B II Runs Aground off Martha’s Vineyard, Coast Guard helicopter crew safely hoisted the fishermen

uscg-logoBOSTON — Coast Guard rescue crews rescued two fishermen from a grounded vessel near Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Thursday at approximately 6 a.m. Watchstanders from Sector Southeastern New England received notification, via VFH channel 16 at approximately 5 a.m., that the 44-foot lobster vessel Bill B II was taking on water and the crew ran the vessel aground. more@uscgnews  14:41
