Coast Guard Medevacs injured Fisherman about 150 miles offshore from Yaquina Bay, Oregon.

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured fisherman Tuesday from a 63-foot commercial fishing boat operating about 150 miles offshore from Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Rescued was Nathanial Miller, 24. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay received a call for help Tuesday at about 1:30 p.m. from a person using a satellite phone aboard the fishing boat Piky. After the distress was relayed from the station to watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend, Oregon, a Coast Guard flight surgeon deemed it necessary to medevac Miller and transport him to a higher level of medical care as soon as possible. >click to read< 13:15

Years ago a visitor from Central Oregon stood on the Depoe Bay Bridge, which runs along the Pacific Coast Highway, otherwise known as State Highway 101. She looked out to see a silver boat zipping around in the ocean, and thought to herself ‘that looks fun and I want to drive that boat.’ “I had no prior knowledge of the Coast Guard, but at that time in my life I was looking for a purpose,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kelsi Dozier, (surfman #561) from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon. “After that family vacation to Depoe Bay and a little video research on YouTube, I reached out to a Coast Guard recruiter.” The Coast Guard has certified 10 surfmen during the past 8 months. Coast Guard assists 17 fishermen off Pacific Northwest Coast since Sunday

Coast Guard crews along the Oregon and Washington coasts assisted 17 fisherman in five responses since Sunday. Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay has busy weekend highlighted by 2 long-distance tows

Operating a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat and the 52-foot Motor Lifeboat Victory, the crew of Station Yaquina Bay and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Blue Shark totaled 40 hours of underway time towing two disabled fishing vessels to safety from a total of 159 miles offshore, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday morning around 9 a.m., the crew of the commercial fishing vessel Kay Ann, 75 miles offshore, reported a broken water pump to the Coast Guard. After no response to a marine assistance radio broadcast, the 52-foot MLB Victory, a 60-year-old surf boat specifically designed for work in the Pacific Northwest, launched from Station Yaquina Bay in Newport. The Victory arrived on scene with the Kay Ann at about midnight and commenced towing back to Newport. The tow home lasted almost 11 hours with an arrival and mooring of the Kay Ann at 10:45 a.m., Sunday. At 12:25 p.m. Saturday, the commercial fishing vessel Barbara Marie, 84 miles offshore, reported a broken motor to the Coast Guard and requested a tow. With the Victory already responding to a case, the Coast Guard Cutter Blue Shark, an 87-foot Patrol Boat homeported in Everett, Washington, but patrolling in the Columbia River, was diverted to assist. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
