Coast Guard treats search for fishermen as rescue mission
The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday that crews were continuing to search on the water and in the air for two fishermen reported missing. The Coast Guard said it considers the effort a rescue mission and that it assumes the fishermen put on survival suits. Capt. Oscar Diaz and his nephew, John Ansay, were aboard the F/V Mistress, which the Coast Guard said capsized and sank about 2.5 miles southeast of Block Island. 7:13 PM Multiple Coast Guard crews and good Samaritans searched throughout the day Tuesday for two missing fishermen after their boat capsized and sank approximately two and half miles southeast of Block Island, Rhode Island. The captain of the fishing vessel Mistress notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England at around 1:30 a.m. that the boat was taking on water. The watch standers issued an urgent marine information broadcast to vessels in the area to request assistance for the crew of the Mistress. U.S. Coast Guard responds to over 700 false alerts in 2018, urges everyone to register beacons
After responding to over 700 false alerts in 2018, the Coast Guard is urging anyone with an emergency position indicating radio beacon to properly register their device. An EPIRB is a device that transmits a distress signal to a satellite system called Cospas-Sarsat. The satellites relay the signal to a network of ground units and ultimately to the Coast Guard and other emergency responders. Owners of commercial fishing vessels, uninspected passenger vessels that carry six or more people, and uninspected commercial vessels are legally required to carry an EPIRB. The U.S. Coast Guard’s Manasquan Inlet/Shark River station has reported that the Miss Kathleen was successfully raised from the Manasquan Inlet last night and placed on a barge. The Coast Guard is monitoring the salvage of a partially-sunken commercial fishing vessel in Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey, Saturday morning. Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay command center received notification at 2 a.m. that the 44-foot fishing vessel Miss Kathleen allided with the northern Manasquan Inlet jetty and was taking on water with three people and a dog aboard. Response to fishing vessel fire in American Samoa continues, investigation underway
The Coast Guard in American Samoa is continuing to investigate the loss of the commercial fishing vessel Jeanette Friday. “The vessel poses minimal risk to residents and the environment,” said Lt. Al Blaisdell, supervisor, Marine Safety Detachment American Samoa. “Due to the depth of water, we understand there will be no salvage attempted. Any fuel remaining aboard if released will dissipate quickly. We are continuing with our investigation into the cause of the fire and the sinking.” Personnel from the MSD began interviews with the crew Thursday. Additional members from Coast Guard Sector Honolulu arrived Thursday to assist. Canada considers mandatory EPIRB’s on all fishing vessels, shift Coast Guard from DFO to Transport Canada
An emergency distress beacon should be made mandatory on all commercial fishing vessels in Canada within two years, according to a Senate study released Thursday that looks at Canada’s search and rescue system at sea. “We believe the time has come. They are mandatory in other countries. It should be mandatory here,” said Sen. Jim Munson, a member of the Senate fisheries committee, which issued the report.,, The Senate report recommends a pilot program to test using commercial helicopter search and rescue in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the North. Lobster boat sinks 11 miles off Jonesport, crew rescued by good Samaritan Bad Behavior
A lobster boat sank off the Jonesport coast in Down East Maine on Sunday. “There were two people on board the fishing vessel Overtimer. The boat was loaded with lobster traps when it took heavy waves and sank 11 miles off Jonesport. … Both people (were) recovered safely,” said a post on the Coast Guard’s Twitter account. On Sunday afternoon, the Coast Guard reported that people aboard the Overtimer had donned “survival suits” before abandoning ship, and that they were recovered by a nearby fishing boat, Bad Behavior, which transported the survivors to shore. >click to read<
Coast Guard orders Taylor Energy to stop 14-year Gulf of Mexico oil leak
The Coast Guard is coming down hard on the owners of a broken oil platform that has been allowed to leak off southeast Louisiana for more than 14 years. New federal estimates put the leak rate at the Taylor Energy Co. well at 10,500 gallons to 29,000 gallons of oil per day. Coast Guard medevacs sick fisherman 42 miles off Nantucket
A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod helicopter crew medevaced a sick 54-year-old man from the 87-foot fishing boat Generation Sunday night 42 miles off Nantucket. The captain of the Generation contacted the Coast Guard at approximately 5:20 p.m. and requested assistance for his sick crew member. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew arrived on scene and hoisted the patient to the helicopter. The aircrew flew the man to Massachusetts General Hospital for further care. He pleaded guilty to false distress and felon in possession of a firearm, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for Alaska Bryan Schroder’s office. COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — Crab Commission is supporting a multi-year study to prevent whale entanglements off the Oregon Coast The Coos Bay World reports that the board of the industry-funded agency approved nearly $45,000 toward the three-year $300,000 project. Coast Guard and local agencies recovered the body of the missing lobersterman Tuesday off Doyle Island, Maine. At approximately 5 p.m., Maine State Police and Maine Warden Service divers recovered the lobsterman about 200 yards west from where he entered the water. Crews searched 233 square nautical miles. The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a person in the water Tuesday near Doyle Island, Maine. A good Samaritan reported to watchstanders at Sector Northern New England that he saw a person falling into the water from a 20-foot commercial lobster boat operating in the vicinity of Doyle Island. Mariners are advised to exercise caution when operating in the area. First responders have swung into action in the wake of Hurricane Michael, providing assistance to survivors and beginning the difficult task of searching for the missing. 17 deaths have been confirmed so far, and teams are still combing the debris left by the storm. Oregon: Coast Guard offers safety training for commercial fishermen
Dungeness crab season is approaching and soon commercial fisherman will be out on the dangerous waters, so the Coast Guard is offering marine safety and survival training for them. The agency says they have five different two-day training sessions scheduled on the Oregon Coast over the next couple of months. The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers coordinated efforts to locate and rescue a boater from a disabled and aground 40-foot fishing vessel 127 miles east-southeast of Cordova, Alaska, Wednesday. A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules aircrew located the operator of the fishing vessel Gambler while conducting a training flight in the area. The HC-130 aircrew dropped a radio to the man to communicate with him. John Aldridge was literally little more than a speck in the sea after being thrown off his lobster boat, the Anna Mary, on July 24, 2013.
