N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries sinks trawler at artificial reef site off Cape Lookout

The state Artificial Reef Program sank a 55-foot trawler at the artificial reef site, AR-305, off Cape Lookout, last week. The program is part of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries. The fishing vessel Alexandria Dawn, the latest addition to the artificial reef, was built in 1984, but has been out of use for around a decade, division officials announced Monday. Barnegat Light longline boat’s surprise catch

You can file this in one in the category of unique catches. An opah weighing 125 pounds was landed by longline vessel Alexandria Dawn, which docks at Viking Village in Barnegat Light. The boat returned Aug.4 from nearly two weeks of fishing for tuna and swordfish at the Georges Banks, near the Canadian line. The vessel’s Captain Bob Brewster made about two dozen sets, one of which caught the opah, said Viking Village employee Austin Schwerzel, who photographed the crew with the fish. >click to read< 15:02

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
