Female Fisherman Ashely Mullenger sees following boom after award
Norfolk’s ‘Female Fisherman’ has seen her social media following boom as she continues to bang the drum for British seafood since winning a national award one year ago. Ashley Mullenger, 36, was crowned ‘Fisherman of the Year’ in the Fishing News Awards last May – the first time ever a woman had won the title. Mrs Mullenger, who is based in Wells-next-the-Sea, said the flurry of media attention that has followed – including an appearance on Jeremy Vine’s Radio Two show – has given her the chance to promote British seafood. “The award has opened doors of opportunities for me,” she said. photos, >click to read< 10:47
Brixham is celebrating after being named Port of the Year
The prestigious award has capped off a remarkable year at the port despite the pandemic and the challenges of Brexit. In 2021, £43.6million worth of fish was auctioned by Brixham Trawler Agents at the port which is currently on course to hit this year’s target of £45 million. BTA directors Adam Mudge and Neil Watson went to Aberdeen and to the Fishing News Awards for 2022. Isle of Man’s teenage fishing apprentice’s joy at UK award win
A Manx teenager is celebrating after being crowned Trainee Fisherman of the Year at a UK national ceremony. Isla Gale said she was “so happy” to receive the accolade at the Fishing News Awards in Aberdeen last week. Currently an apprentice on local vessel the Shannon Kimberly, she aims to be the island’s first female skipper. Fraserburgh skipper William Whyte, named as country’s best
A north-east skipper has been named as the country’s best fisherman. Scottish fishermen took home six gongs in total at this year’s Fishing News Awards, but it was Fraserburgh skipper William Whyte, who helms vessel Forever Grateful, who was named as the country’s best. Mr Whyte, who the awards said showcased determination and skill, was named as Pelagic Fisherman of the Year, while Burnmouth’s John Affleck was named Shellfisherman of the Year. The awards were presented by professional chef and restaurateur Simon Rimmer. Ian Shearer, skipper of Shetland’s Courageous, was named best fisherman under the age of 25, while Billy Hughes, manager of Pittenweem Fishermen’s Mutual Association, took home an award for his lifetime in the industry.
