Big Salmon Report: Salmon seasons get underway around state

This year, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is predicting a harvest of 133.1 million salmon statewide, including 538,000 kings, 33.6 million sockeyes, 4.4 million silvers, 19.9 million chums, and 74.7 million pinks. Bycatch symposium underway

The most common bycatch topics in Alaska — salmon caught by the Bering Sea boats targeting pollock, and halibut caught by Alaska trawlers — were on the table at a fisheries symposium today. Scientists, industry representatives and others interested in fisheries science, management and policy are discussing everything bycatch at the Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium, which runs through Thursday at the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Anchorage. Fishermen file suit over salmon management

United Cook Inlet Drift Association and Cook Inlet Fishermen’s Fund filed  suit in District of Columbia District Court Jan. 18 over the transfer of  salmon management from federal authorities to the state of Alaska.
