Coast Guard issues temporary safety zone near Morro Bay Harbor Entrance

coast guardThe Captain of the Port will be enforcing a temporary safety zone due to hazardous conditions in the vicinity of the Morro Bay Harbor entrance from November 29 –December 13, 2016. The safety zone will encompass all navigable waters from the surface to the sea floor near the inside and outside of the mouth of the Morro Bay Harbor entrance. This action is necessary to reduce significant hazards subject to the vessels, the harbor and the public during periods of poor weather conditions. The Coast Guard will energize the Morro Bay “Rough Bar Warning Light” to signify that rough bar conditions exist at the harbor’s entrance. Working Waterfront: Are Morro Bay officials attempting to chip away at Measure D?

Morro-Bat-waterfront-e1471729401329In 1981, Morro Bay fishermen Joe Giannini and Ed Ewing crafted Measure D to protect the local fishing industry. The measure sets aside the waterfront lease sites between Beach Street and Target Rock for uses “primarily for the purpose of serving or facilitating licensed commercial fishing activities or noncommercial recreational fishing activities, or is clearly incidental thereto.” Arguments in favor of the measure included: “This area is known throughout the world as the essence of Morro Bay, and its future should not be left to five council members subject to changing political pressures and self-interests. Measure D is short, direct, and easily understandable. The opponents know what it means and they fear it because it takes away their power to give financial favors to their friends.” Voters agreed and the measure passed and became part of the Morro Bay Municipal Code. It appeared that Giannini and Ewing had scored a major victory. Unfortunately, they hadn’t counted on opposition tactics that have been used repeatedly over the years. Read the story here 08:54

Offshore Wind Spin in Morro Bay – trawling and netting would be off limits

floating windmillAt a public forum Thursday in Morro Bay, residents grilled officials from a Seattle-based wind-energy company on how their proposal to install 100 windmills off the coast might affect fishing, views and the environment. Officials with Trident Winds (UK) sought to put the audience of about 100 people at ease, saying the structures would have minimal impacts while supplying renewable energy for up to 300,000 California households. Morro Bay officials oppose Dynegy wave parks – “they just ignored everything the fishermen said,”

Morro Bay city councilmembers voiced unanimous opposition to two proposed wave-power-generation facilities off the coast.  “It looks to me, in the proposal … that they just ignored everything the fishermen said,” Councilwoman Nancy Johnson said of Dynegy’s permit application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for wave parks in Estero Bay and off Point Estero.
