Penzance fishing company fined for illegal crab and lobster fishing
A fishing company has been fined for illegal crab and lobster fishing offences. Rowse Fishing Limited, represented by owner and director Mark Rowse, appeared before Truro Magistrates’ Court in connection with a series of offences relating to undersize fishing and logbook offences. His son Benjamin Rowse was also in the dock for fishing and landing ‘berried’ lobsters and scrubbing off their eggs, which is illegal to do as it damages future stocks by wiping out thousands of unborn shellfish. In court the company blamed its crews. The court was told that in April last year, the Emma Louise TO60 vivier potting vessel owned by Rowse Fishing Ltd, based at the Varfell Park industrial estate in Long Rock, Penzance, landed 750kg of edible crab, 100kg of spider crab and 20kg of lobster. Four fishermen who tragically lost their lives when their boat floundered onto rocks off Cornwall have been remembered by the descendants of those who tried to save them. The four fishermen from Ostend in Belgium were part of a crew of six when the motor trawler Vierge Marie hit the rocks in heavy seas, strong winds and thick fog conditions. The incident was reported at 7.40am on January 11, 1937 by a local police officer who alerted the crew of the W&S lifeboat who launched the lifeboat from Penlee Point at 8am and steamed down the coast to the site of the wreck. >click to read< 09:55
Penzance fishing trawler Algrie which crashed into Plymouth rocks once caught a nuclear attack submarine
The Cornish fishing trawler that crashed into rocks in front of spectators in Plymouth this weekend has run into trouble before – when it caught a nuclear submarine. The 70ft Algrie dangerously dragged the nuclear attack sub HMS Spartan in the waters off Land’s End in 1982 for several minutes before the sub surfaced. The captain at the time was then ordered to cut free his nets and tackle before the sub moved on. It was understood to have cost £8,000. click here to read the story 14:01
