Three Crews from the UK’s RNLI Coordinate to Save Historic Sailing Vessel
The UK’s volunteer Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is being commended for its operation earlier in the week to assist a historic sailing vessel that was taking on water and requested urgent assistance. It became a 10-hour operation involving three of the RNLI crews to see the historic ship safely to port so that it could be repaired to continue its service as a charity training vessel. The Falmouth Coastguards received the call for assistance on Wednesday, May 22, in the evening from the Leader which operates for the Atlantic Youth Trust. Built in 1892, the vessel is the largest and possibly oldest surviving example of a unique vessel, the Brixham trawler. Once a common design of a wooden hull fishing vessel, there were over 400 of the trawlers in Brixham, but today it is believed that just five remain. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 06:50

Falmouth Lifeboat celebrates its 150th anniversary
Falmouth’s first lifeboat arrived 150 years ago and since then the town’s volunteer crews have been on more than 2,500 shouts saving 440 lives. This year Falmouth Lifeboat station celebrates its 150th anniversary with a whole host of events which look back at its history as well as looking at its future with a new fundraising appeal. To mark the occasion Simon Culliford, deputy lifeboat press officer, and David Barnicoat, master mariner, former lifeboat volunteer and retired pilot, have written a book about the lifeboat’s history, which has been used to put this article together. The book celebrates the people and the lifeboats that are part of the history of Falmouth Lifeboat Station. Falmouth is now one of 14 stations in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and has an inshore and all weather lifeboat – which can operate up to 100 miles out to sea. click here to read the story. As research reveals more fishermen die in January than in any other month of the year, the lifesaving charity has launched a hard-hitting campaign encouraging fishermen to make sure their boats keep them safe at sea. RNLI figures show that 59% of commercial fishing fatalities were due to a loss of vessel stability leading to capsize, leaking or swamping between 2010 and 2013 – with 30% of deaths occurring in the month of January when seas can be rough and water temperatures are at their lowest.
