We’ve previous documented that seals, sea lions, polar bears, sea stars, turtles, sockeye salmon, herring, anchovies and sardines on the West Coast of North America are all suffering mysterious diseases … which are killing many. We’ve asked whether this is related  to  massive releases of radiation from Fukushima. Update Sadly, we can now add other wildlife to the list.  George Washington @ zero hedge. I dunno. Sea lions, Gulf quotas, salmon bycatch top NPFMC agenda

npfmcA final decision is scheduled for Steller sea lion protection measures at the North Pacific Fishery Management Council’s October meeting. The council will meet Oct. 2-8 in Anchorage, with Steller sea lion protections slated to come up Oct. 3. Other items on the agenda are fishing limits for several crab stocks including Bristol Bay red king crab and Bering Sea snow crab, final action on an economic data collection program for Gulf of Alaska trawlers and groundfish harvest specifications. more@alaskajournal  Livestreaming information is here  13:31

Protecting salmon from sea lions: Progress is elusive

Although there’s been considerable effort over the years to remove predatory sea lions feasting on endangered fish in the Columbia River, the large mammals continue to flock to the area each spring. Fish management officials say the process required to lethally eliminate sea lions is too lengthy, and subsequently little — if any — impact has been made on the problem. @yakimaherald

Anti-whaling Sea Shepherd group turns their attention to Oregon’s sea lions

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A conservation group known for interfering with whaling ships wants to stop Oregon’s killing of sea lions that eat endangered salmon in the Columbia River. The group Sea Shepherd  was in Astoria on Sunday photographing and video-taping Oregon  Department of Fish and Wildlife technicians as they captured and branded  38 sea lions at the East Mooring Basin. continue reading
