California is preparing to make a grave mistake by allowing offshore windfarms to be built. The promise of green energy is the driving force behind this decision. The truth is, this is not green at all! The ocean is the last place we need to place windfarms. There are many more disadvantages than advantages to placing these floating wind turbines on the ocean. Over regulation and over-criminalizing America’s commercial fisheries is putting an industry out of business. Fishermen do not need to be treated as criminals. Fishing is CIVIL not CRIMINAL. These people just want to work and support their families like everyone else. They need help. SIGN THE PETITION Support the North Carolina Shrimp Fishermen Fight another Closure.
Local businesses, fishing families and coastal communities depend on catches from trawlers – namely shrimp – as a source of economic commerce, as well as locally-grown, organic protein. More than 90 percent of all shrimp consumed in the country is imported. By designating the state’s inland waters as permanent secondary nursery areas, they would be closed to trawling. If that were to happen, North Carolina would loose a considerable amount of income to foreign competition, as well as access to this bountiful resource and a historic profession among generations of coastal citizens. Secondary nursery areas are already in place to protect habitat in inland waters. Please don’t close the entire area to trawling. Petition
A message from Dr. Rothschild regarding what he would do as NOAA administrator. Chris McCaffity
1. Follow the letter of the law(it seems almost unnecessary to say this, but the past administration would have done a better job if they had studied the laws that govern fisheries management). 2. Focus the scientific effort on critical issues and base management decisions on science. 3. Listen to the folks that are most effected by management decisions. 4. Promote cooperative research. 5. Be transparent and operate in the sunshine. 6. Provide incentives to employees to follow principals 7.Integrate elements of NOAA to be more cost effective(e.g. Sea Grant and NMFS).
