As Salmon and Squid Seasons Rebound, New Questions
Over the last few months, hundreds of boats have been fishing off of, or transiting along Santa Cruz County’s coastline. Industry analysts report plenty of bright spots in both the salmon and squid markets this season. Squid fishermen in Narragansett concerned about offshore wind farm
With calamari being Rhode Island’s official appetizer, there’s no doubt squid is a lucrative industry in the Ocean State. Ask a group of squid fishermen what it’s worth and they’ll be the first tell you that it’s priceless. Then they’ll say it’s worth about $1.2 billion. However, those fishermen and the fish houses that process and freeze the squid are concerned about an offshore wind farm that will be built in the waters where they make their livelihood. “Getting the public aware of what is potentially happening to their food source is crucial,” said Meghan Lapp of Fisheries Liason of SeaFreeze Limited, one of the many fish houses in Narragansett. >click to read<18:18
Japan’s squid fishermen grow irate over North Korean missiles
Japanese squid fishermen are starting to feel like sitting ducks as North Korea continues to fire ballistic missiles that end up hitting their fishing grounds in the Sea of Japan. “We don’t know when and where (North Korean missiles) will drop,” said an official of a fisheries cooperative at Hachinohe Port in Aomori Prefecture, which boasts the largest squid haul in Japan. “It’s like an unpredictable accident waiting to happen, and we cannot do anything about it.” In its latest act of belligerence, North Korea fired three ballistic missiles on Sept. 5 that dropped within Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) about 200 to 250 kilometers from Okushirito island of Hokkaido. The areas in the Sea of Japan where the missiles landed contain fishing grounds of Japanese flying squid, according to the Tokyo-based Japan Squid Fisheries Association (JASFA). Squid Fishermen save Six Kayakers off the Coast of Malibu
Six kayakers off the coast of Malibu were unexpectedly blown out to sea today as the Santa Ana winds returned to the region on Sunday morning, but thankfully a squid-fishing fleet came to their rescue. Read the rest here 13:16
