Last Two Speckled Trout Scoping Meetings This Week, Legislative Update, 3/20/2023, Memorial for Susan West. On Sunday a memorial was held for Susan West in Hatteras who passed away last fall. NCFA Board member Dewey Hemilright, Thomas Newman and I attended. I will write more about the memorial and about Susan’s advocacy for commercial fishing families later. As is always the case for something like this, you get to see many folks that you haven’t seen for quite a while. It was good to see so many familiar faces at a very fitting tribute for Susan. Susan West, 73, remembered as longtime voice of NC fishers has passed away
Susan West, a longtime advocate for the Hatteras Island fishing community and a writer who helped foster improved communications and respect between regulators and fishermen, died last week at age 73. “She made sure that Hatteras and those small fishing communities were never left out of the conversation,”, As a young transplant to the Outer Banks from Baltimore, the course of West’s life was set after meeting Rob West, a surfer from Long Island, when they worked together at a Hatteras restaurant in the 1970s. After they married, Rob became a commercial fisherman. In the early 1990s, as tensions started rising around commercial fishing, Susan decided to organize a local women’s auxiliary group to the North Carolina Fisheries Association. >click to read< 07:00
Working Watermen Commission Takes on Timely Issues at their Inaugural Meeting
The revitalized Dare County Commission for Working Watermen held their inaugural meeting on Wednesday, March 21, and tackled several pressing issues that are connected to the local fishing industry. The commission originally formed in 2008, but quietly ceased meeting in December of 2012 without formally disbanding. After public comments made by journalist and researcher Susan West at the BOC’s August 20, 2018 Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting, interest in reviving the commission was renewed, with County Commissioner Steve House signing on to be the Chairman and county commissioner representative for the endeavor. >click to read<15:13
